“Why did you kiss my ear?”
“Why are you holding my hand?”
“Where’s your other hand?”
“Between two panels…”
“Those aren’t panels!”
Reed Gunther #4
By Shane Houghton and Chris Houghton
This sequence made me laugh and laugh. I’m not sure why, because I’ll be honest, it’s a pretty low end joke, but built up as it was, with gag after gag in the issue of Reed in New York City, it just hit perfectly. This is a great book, and one of the really fun things from Image these days, and this issue was the best one yet. I’m going to employ “Nickel Rum!” as my exclamation of choice as often as possible from here on out.
Thunderbolts #163
By Jeff Parker, Kev Walker, Frank Martin Jr., & Joe Caramagna
It takes a bold comic book to devote an entire page to a startled mountain goat, and the killing thereof. Panel 2 kills me, it should be said.
Animal Man #1
By Jeff Lemire, Travel Foreman, Dan Green, Lovern Kindzierski, & Jared K. Fletcher
A) This is creepy. No doubt.
B) This isn’t even the “oh shit” moment of this comic book. It’s just one of them.
Detective Comics #1
By Tony Salvatore Daniel, Ryan Winn, Tomeu Morey, & Jared K. Fletcher
This is such a cool looking sequence, and an interesting way to do talking heads. It’s not really anything new, but it’s very well done.
Swamp Thing #1
By Scott Snyder, Yanick Paquette, Nathan Fairbairn, & John J. Hall
This was the single most creepy scene I’ve read in a comic, probably since the first Alan Moore run. That’s likely an exaggeration. I admit it. But either way, this is some unsettling stuff, and as the caption says, “it’s all just starting…” Oh boy.
Wolverine: Debt of Death
By David Lapham, David Aja, Bettie Breitweiser, & Dave Lanphear
Just you try to pick out one single part of this comic book to highlight. It was nearly impossible. That’s how good this issue was. There was an 18 panel page people! Either way, S.H.I.E.L.D. has Trouble Bubbles apparently. And this is a cutaway featuring Nick Fury flying one. I could stare at this all day.
SHIELD Trouble Bubbles! love it. That really is a sweet page.
Comics need more Aja.
Luke Cage yelling THEY EVEN TOOK THE DAMN TOWER?! with lots of seagulls around him in the Thunderbolts cold open was my favorite.
I mean, that page from Daniel could be straight out of Dark Knight Returns, right? I loved it and I have previously disliked all of Daniel’s stuff before. New era, indeed.
LOVED that page from Wolverine. David Aja really needs to do more art, particularly stuff involving SHIELD
Good calls, all.
A little sad there’s no OMAC on here. There were some really great panels in that book.
Awesome “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” reference.
The panels were pretty good, too.
So not only do I need to buy about 6 DC numbers 1s this week, I now find myself needing to buy a Wolverine one-shot??!! A WOLVERINE ONE-SHOT????!!!! Goddamn you people.
It was fucking awesome.
Seconded.
’cause the whole thing is a masterclass on comics illustration. Look at Nick Fury’s body language when coming out of the police station in the rain. Look at how naturally Kiku is squatting, like Japanese girls do. Look at the attention to detail – the Japanese lettering on a partly-visible bottle of sake is EXACTLY how it should look, for example. It’s just brilliant work. The story is pretty decent too but Aja is just taking fools to school with this one.
I have it in my clammy grasp and will report back later once I’ve had a chance to read it.
Yeah…yeah that was awesome. Cheers guys.
I love panel week, thanks.
That’s a pretty cool sequence to make the conversation interesting in Detective Comics. It sounded like Tony Daniel’s original run on Batman died on arrival (and the first trade or two I read of it was no picnic either) but this looks really good. It’ll be exciting for me to read in trade anyways.
My favorite panel came from Thunderbolts too but it’s when Satana uses her magic to somewhat ‘resurrect’ Allied heroes to kill Nazi’s. That was a fucking awesome panel right there.
My two favorite panels of the week were the last page of detective Comics and the last page of Animal Man. Both great “OH FUCK!” moments that have me dying to read the next issues!
Didn’t want to ruin it for people.
Agreed, those where “oh.my.GOD!” moments hehe!
This week must have been one of the hardest weeks to pick the panels!
It seems every DC #1 had that oh snap moment! Also thought some of the full page panels in Stormwatch were gorgeous.
Think the creepiest panel of the week definitely goes to the last page reveal in Red Skull: Incarnate #3. Saw it coming but… gave me chills!
Red Skull is such a depressing book but I can’t stop reading it. This issue did not give me much of a shock as the end of issue two….still gives me chills.
GET DAVID AJA ON A NICK FURY/SHIELD BOOK ASAP!!
Did anyone else notice the stalker in the new DC books?
I’ve got a sneaking suspicion we’ll be seeing Swamp Thing and Animal Man panels here every month for the duration of the run! I”ll be curious to see if any DC #1’s make it to the Best of the Week in Covers section as we’ve been poring over those covers for months now.
Trouble Bubble? I don’t get you kids and your slang.

Casanova: Avaritia 1 also had some really fun work in it – page 17 in particular was pretty awesome. And the back cover image teasing issue two shows an Attack Panda. ATTACK. PANDA.
Yeah, but then I would have had to read it, and that was not going to happen.
That Thunderbolts panel reminds me of Northlanders #40: The Hunt, only not as well executed. In the Northlanders book all 20 pages revolved about the hunter hunting the deer. Awesome!!
I thought for sure Wong reading the newspaper on the toilet from New Avengers Annual #1 would make this week’s list.
That Animal Man panel didn’t even make the top three of Oh Shit Moments in that issue.
