The Best of the Week in Panels – 08.10.2011

Live, from New York! It's panels!

(Watch out for the Hellboy SPOILER down at the bottom!)

Batman and Robin #26

By David Hine, Andrei Dressan, Artur Fujita, & Patrick Brosseau

File under things you don't need to read at two in the morning. This panel actually made me utter "Oh, fuck" out loud.

— Conor KIlpatrick

Criminal: Last of the Innocent #3

By Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, & Dave Stewart

I'm don't think too much of myself to tell you that I laughed at this delightful vulgarity. I just love the contrast of the Archie style with the particular language here. The fighting in the background is also very funny.

— Josh Flanagan

Punisher MAX #16

By Jason Aaron, Steve Dillon, Matt Hollingsworth, & Cory Petit

I don't know that anyone draws The Punisher quite as terrifying as Steve Dillon does. Here he is. the first time we see Frank as The Punisher in the flashbacks, and in his eyes we can see every last bit of pain and death that he will mete out in the coming years.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Detective Comics #881

By Scott Snyder, Jock, Francesco Francavilla, David Baron, & Jared K. Fletcher

This was the turning point. The other cool part is that James isn't really all that disturbed by Batman. Or the knife in his eye. He's a cool customer. I got chills from this panel.

— Josh Flanagan

Batgirl #24

By Bryan Q. Miller, Pere Perez, Guy Major, & Dave Sharpe

The last three panels of Bryan Q. Miller's Batgirl were just about perfect.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Hellboy: The Fury #3

By Mike Mignola, Duncan Fegredo, Dave Stewart, & Clem Robins

I didn't know how it was going to go down, and this was a great way to do it, right down to Red's reaction. Spot on. And sad as hell.

— Josh Flanagan

  1. What made me go ‘oh fuck’ in Batman and Robin (and it was my Panel of the week) was the reveal of the ‘Son of Man’s’ father…..in the various tanks….and his eyeballs and….It was a fucked up page is what I’m saying.

    Two things though:

    1) Criminal looks awesome. People have told me about the Archie parody going on but seeing it here made me laugh. I want this comic!

    2) I don’t know why but Hellboy’s reaction to dying seemed fitting. I want my last words to be ‘Son of A-‘ too.

  2. “I’m don’t think too much of myself to tell you that I laughed at this delightful vulgarity. I just love the contrast of the Archie style with the particular language here. The fighting in the background is also very funny.

Have you not read my book?

  3. Great panels! That Batman & Robin is damn creepy. One of my favorite panes was in America Vampire Survival of the Fittest #3 when Dr. Pavel was about to begin his presentation, the whole room was dark, and in the dark you saw the glow of the red vampire eyes. So creepy!

  4. “Poot”? lol

  5. I’m kinda bummed out Batgirl’s ending…

  6. Um… I don’t want it to be the end! …Hello?!? Anybody?!?

  7. I LOVE that Hellboy panel and the Detective Comics panel.  They both encapsulate the essence of their respective characters.

  8. Criminal is better then ever

  9. That Batgirl ending ..sniff..sniff..

  10. “Finger-Bang” is a criminally underused phrase.

  11. hellboy may be dead…on earth, but we’ll get to see him in Hell next as drawn by Mignola himself and that i cannot wait for!

  12. that last page of Batgirl made up for quite a bit of what I thought was an otherwise weak finish to the story.  You can pretty much tell that halfway through they got told to wrap it up right there and then for the New 52.   But thankfully, the artwork, the attitude…thats as good a way to finish out Stephanie Brown’s character as we can ask for!

  13. @JohnVFerrigno  “I just like them to fight over me!”

  14. OK, that panel from Batman and Robin is super freaky!
