The Best of the Week in Panels – 08.31.2011

“Bak Wai Lo Me… Panels.”
“Yeah, glad I taught you that fuckin’ word. These are panels, huh?”
“HO! PANELS!!”
“Two panels killed him… and stole the dope he was bringin’ to you!”
“Panels… YOU! SWIDGEN!”

Flashpoint #5

By Geoff Johns, Andy Kubert, Sandra Hope, Jesse Delperdang, Alex Sinclair, & Mike J. Napolitano

The highlight of this entire event was the Grodd one-shot, so it’s good to see him get a moment in the main book’s finale. “Grodd too?” and I laughed…

— Ron Richards

The Sixth Gun #14

By Cullen Bunn, Tyler Crook, Bill Crabtree, & Bill E. Sherwood

This is coming from the writer in me, but if I wrote a panel that basically said, “union soldiers begin to charge across a field,” and got this back, I’d shit myself with glee. It’s simple, but it’s wonderful cartooning, evoking so much more than the lines would indicate at first. I love the boot in the foreground. Craft is important.

— Josh Flanagan

Secret Avengers #16

By Warren Ellis, Jamie McKelvie, Matthew Wilson, & David Lanphear

This is just elegant, and the contrast of Moon Knight’s clean and smooth wings against the buildings is exactly what is so great about Jamie McKelvie. Gorgeous.

— Josh Flanagan

Rocketeer Adventures #4

By Joe Pruett, Tony Harris, JD Mettler, & Shawn Lee

Homina homina homina. This is Tony Harris at his best. Just look at that layout, and his figures. No artist impressed me this much this week. If he were to draw a series that looked like this, I’d be beside myself.

— Josh Flanagan

Justice League #1

By Geoff Johns, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Alex Sinclair, & Patrick Brousseau

People are going to be talking about this moment for years. Mark my words.

— Josh Flanagan

Comments

  1. That was my favorite moment of the first issue of the new JLA

  2. That Secret Avengers panel has such a beautiful balance of serenity and grandeur. Wow.

  3. the green lantern-batman panels were the oposite to what frank miller did on ALL STAR goddamn batman and robin, age 12

  4. “I swear… She was already pregnant.”

  5. Also, great Deadwood riff up top.

  6. I don’t know if I liked that Justice League panel or the “Guy in a Bat costume” panel more. The Batsmirk sells that scene.

  7. 1. You guys had to blow up that Grodd panel about 10X . It barely made the issue but I’m glad he got some love.
    2. Really liked the Green Lantern/Batman moment!
    3. Love the Rocketeer layout!
    4. The Secret Avengers….ummmm
    5. The Sixth Gun Union soldiers…are they zombies?

  8. My favorite panel was when Batman get’s all weak in the knees in Flashpoint #5, it was just really well drawn and you completely got that feeling of emotional dizziness conveyed perfectly.

  9. That Tony Harris art was gorgeous. I love that page but I have to admit I got a little confused when reading it. It might have just been me though… Still looks great!

  10. I loved this panel with Bats and GL, but the panel where Hal realizes Bruce is JUST a guy in a costume was my favorite of the week. Good panels here.

  11. JLA didn’t wow me by any means. But that ring exchange was pretty great. Hal is such a pompous ass.

  12. Batman has Hal’s number in a manner of minutes. you have to love that.

and the ‘what’s this do’ line, just fantastic. it’s the exact first thought that would pop into the bat’s head.

Johns is soft and subtle right now, and it’s gonna build into a scream.

can’t wait to be a few issues down the road.

  13. I’ve only had the time to read one of my books so far, but it’s going to be REALLY hard to top Odin headbutting Galactus in Mighty Thor #5. Also, the last page was GREAT!

  14. That McKelvie panel piece is stunning. I have always loved well drawn architecture, another reason why I’m a fan of Eaglesham’s work.

  15. While that JL scene was great, I find it strange they would put hell there. I know its not a bad word by today’s standards, but this was advertised on cartoon network, so I’m sure kids will be reading this, so I hope parents don’t take an unnecessary amount of offense to that.

  16. awesome

  17. It would’ve been funnier if after Batman got the ring the exchange was:

“How the hell did you get it off!?”-Hal

    “……It’s a Ring.”-Batman

That’s all you need in my book. lol

  18. I think there should be a new rule: In EVERY first issue of a Justice League book, Batman puts a Green Lantern in their place. this is ALMOST as good as “ONE PUNCH!” And that’s a huge compliment!

  19. Mm. Need to have the panel near the end of X-Force when Warren lands in the small town with Genocide and consoles the angelic, beatific little boy and encourages him to tell his mother that he loves her. So… wrong, creepy, gentle and revolting.

  20. Great selection, there Josh. I love the Secret Avengers spread, and there’s so much more goodness in there.

  21. You are so right, Josh – that moment will be around for a long time.

@zombox – you took the words right out of my mouth, sir.

  22. As soon as I saw the double-page spread in Secret Avengers, I guessed that it was the panel singled out, though there were plenty of other worthy images in that issue as well. I love the graceful edges of Moon Knight’s cape.

  23. Grodd good.
