NYCC 2012: Oni Announces Slate Of New Titles

There’s a rumbling out on the distance. Beyond the outskirts of town, out where the ground meets the sky and where your eyes start to play tricks on  you. That man rides a horse. That horse rides a dream. That dream comes from a Japanese demon that…

Okay, enough hyperbole — Oni Press just announced a slew of new titles at its panel today at New York Comic Con. Here’s a rundown of what was announced:

Wars In Toyland: Ghost Projekt writer Joe Harris returns with artist Adam Pollina on a twisted take on the classic Babes In Toyland. This is planned a standalone graphic novel is to be published in an over-sized, landscape format sometime in 2013.

The Sixth Gun: Sons Of The Gun: Brian Hurtt and Cullen Bunn aren’t satisfied doing one of the best ongoing series in comics; they’re taking their supernatural western and expanding on it with this spinoff series focusing on the individual members of Gen. Hume’s posse. Artist Brian Churilla (The Secret History Of D.B. Cooper) will illustrate, with Hurtt joining Bunn as co-writer. This is scheduled to launch in February 2013.

Helheim: Assault On Precinct 13 with vikings and monsters? I may be projecting a bit there, but I can’t help but be excited about this new series by Cullen Bunn and artist Joëlle Jones. It follows a viking named Rikard who is killed in a battle with a witch and re-animated to fight against his people .

A Boy & A GirlOni stalwart Jamie S. Rich is back with a futuristic take on a romance novel with artist Natalie Nourigat in tow. A boy falls hard for a girl only to have her disappear before he can get to know her. Sounds like Blade Runner meets Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlist. This will premiere as a webcomic on OniPress.com in January.

Buzz: Another comic making its debut on OniPress.com in January, Buzz delves into the highly competitive world of spelling bees. The comic is by a pair of newcomers, writer Ananth Panagariya and artist Tessa Stone.

The latter two are webcomics part of a planned reboot of Oni’s website, re-orienting it to be less a catalog of Oni’s print offerings and to become a hub of content, from news and supplemental information for their print offerings as well as the launching pad for original comic series like Buzz and A Boy & A Girl. The publisher stated its already lining up two more original comic series to join the site later in 2013.

Comments

  1. All look interesting, but looking forward to Sons of the Gun and Helheim.

    Congrats and good luck Oni!

  2. Helheim….I think we already saw this concept (more or less) in Valen the Outcast — which got cancelled.

  3. Helheim looks very cool!

  4. ONI is becoming my favorite publisher with the quickness! I want ALL these books…

  5. Joe Harris and Adam Pollina were the team on Slingers #0, which was the first issue in one of my favorite series as a kid, so I might pick up Wars In Toyland. Helheim and Sons of the Gun sound like books I want to check out for sure
