From Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. #11 (2007)

Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen’s Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. ongoing series was a stand out title over at Marvel. Stacked full of D-list heroes, Nextwave was put together by the Highest Anti-Terrorism Effort or H.A.T.E., an acronym that should have given the team pause. After learning that H.A.T.E. was as evil as their name suggested, the team left and began to actively work against them. From Fin Fang Foom to Celestials, Nextwave had their hands full in battling some pretty heavy duty opponents. But really, this whole thing was an excuse for Ellis and Immonen to have loud, crazy fun.  No where is this better shown than in the series’ eleventh issue.

In this issue, Nextwave make their way through two-page spread after two-page spread of ludicrous canon fodder. This particular two-page spread is my favorite of this sequence. Here, Nextwave is battling against snakes flying planes, hordes of primates dressed like Wolverine, and one giant King Kong-esque ape also with Wolverine powers holding what appears to be a banana bomb. It’s wonderful. This is Ellis and Immonen having a grand old time.

  1. This was such a great series, anyone have any suggestions of books similar in tone? (Hard to find one with such a powerhouse team I’m sure)

    • I’m not sure there’s really anything quite like Nextwave, but I think some parts of Casanova (Matt Fraction, Gabriel Bá, Fabio Moon) achieve similar levels of zaniness.

And fun acronyms, lots of that in Casanova as well.

    • Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE. I thought of it because it’s heavy on acronyms but is also somewhat similar in tone.

    • I felt Umbrella Academy had a similar tone. It was a lot of fun. Gerard Way was the writer and Gabrielle Ba was the artist.

    • Try Mystery Society….good stuff as well.

    • wow, that’s awesome I haven’t read any of those yet. Thanks!

  2. And remember, this is, maybe, the fourth most awesome layout in this particular issue

  3. Yup that whole issue was crazy fun.

  4. This book was pretty damn cool. Ellis has done some fun stuff at Marvel. I really liked Ruins and his Thunderbolts, too.

Was this book as awesome as it looks like?

  6. This is one of my all time favorite series and this sequence is a great example why. I personally love the one page with the evil Stephen Hawkings.

Hope we see another ‘Great Pages’ showcasing the West Side Story dancing Mindless Ones.

  7. Nextwave Agents of H.A.T.E. is a very overlooked an excellent Marvel series & one of my favorite trades. They should do a new special HC edition to garner some attention to the series and maybe spark some demand for more left field style Marvel series.
