Before I sat down to read this book, I figured it would be a lot like most of the stories in the old ACTION COMICS WEEKLY format where multiple stories were told week to week with multiple pages each.  I quickly figured out that it was more like the Superman feature in ACTION COMICS WEEKLY, which devoted only two pages to the story each week.  That was just too few.  The same goes for this first issue of WEDNESDAY COMICS.  The stories didn’t really do much, but the oversized art was amazing at times.

Some surprises: Kyle Baker’s HAWKMAN feature.  The painted background in the third panel was unexpected and beautiful.  Lopez’s METAL MEN looked fantastic in the large printing.  Giving a whole half a page to IRIS WEST was a really cute idea.

I’m sticking with this one.  Reading all these back-to-back for multiple issues is going to be a treat.  Here’s hoping they don’t make the BATMAN feature first each time, as it cuts about a quarter of the art out of the story due to the WEDNESDAY COMICS title up top.  I hope they make KAMANDI first next time, as it was my least favorite story in the bunch.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

Oh, wow, Kamandi was probably my favorite of the bunch. 🙁

But it’s cool that there’s something for everybody in here, yeah?

    Exactly.

My problems with KAMANDI were my own fault.  As I mentioned, I didn’t have a firm grasp of what the format was going into the book, so I turned the first page hoping that the Batman story would continue only to find a story about Kamandi.  Bit of a let-down there.  Plus, it had a PRINCE VALIANT format going on, which turned me off to it.  The art was beautiful though.

That said, the Prince Valiant format actually makes really good use of the page real estate. It was neat to see how different teams tackled the challenge.

I like seeing different writers and artists telling different stories.  That may be why I’m also trying to get all the back issues of the SHOWCASE ’93 – ’96 series and ACTION COMICS WEEKLY.  Apparently, I love DC anthologies.

  5. I was surprized by Deadman. Not familar with the character, I thought the art was spectacular. And what sets this book apart is the way that artists can take advantage of the alternate layout. The panels in Deadman, I thought, were really well done. Wonder Woman may have been a bit too busy though – it felt like the text necessitated too many panels, some of them crammed among others.
