I’m still waiting for my All Winners 70th Anniversary issue, cause apparently Diamond is screwing around with my LCS. So here I am, a comic short with my pullbin and I just feel like I needed to pick something up. I look at the shelves of the store and see what caught my eye:

‘Walking Dead’? Tempting but reading in trade.

‘Ultimate Spider-Man’? Bendis still the writer? (checks) No thank you then.

”Ultimate Avengers’? Uh…..well why not?

If this was two years ago, I would totally be stoked for a Mark Millar Ultima….I mean Avengers comic. Cause he did a badass job with the first two Ultimate series and if there’s a guy who will give you a summer blockbuster; it’s Millar. But with ‘Old Man Logan’ stink all around him and just a lack of interest in the Ultimate universe in general; I second guessed on picking it up. Well here I am, again, with some extra money to spend. Why not give this a try, huh? It has to be a blast to read right?

For the most part, yes I do say this is a good comic. Basically this ‘kinda’ introduces the Avengers team as Cap, Hawkeye, and Iron Man are definite to be apart of this. It has Cap and Barton fight the group AIM and suddenly the Red Skull shows up. Now I have no idea if this is the first introduction of the character. If Red Skull has shown up in a Ultimate comic before then forgive me. But if it is his first appearence, then it’s a pretty sudden and unannouced appearence. He just shows out of no where in a small helicopter and beats the crap out of Cap. Notice I’m not really talking about the story here, well that’s because this is like ‘G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra’ where there really isn’t. Just a quick beginning with Hawkeye and Fury then just mostly quick action panels of fighting the bad guys. It’s not bad by any means but this was really a quick read in retrospect.

“Oh boo-hoo”, says a very big man who works for Image. “The comic was too short for you to read? Well maybe you should look at the art and appreciate it for all it’s worth”. Then he suddenly gives me a bear hug and walks off.

If there’s anything to appreciate about the comic is the artwork. I’ll give it that this is a very good looking comic, almost to the point that this is better then what Bryan Hitch has done. The action flows nicely and the characters have a nice sheen to them. Red Skull looks a bit ridiculous with his huge muscles and gang tattoos; but I’ll give it a pass. The whole sequence with Hawkeye jumping out of the helicopter is pretty f’n sweet and pretty much sums up my love for the art.

I don’t know how to say this….but I think after one date we should see other people. Maybe down the road in a couple of months I can read you in a whole trade. So far you were pretty shallow and other then providing a great action sequences I see very reason on why this comic exists. Your not a bad comic, but just not as incredible as I hoped you be. What’s that? Oh if I dump you then you’ll have to go back to Jeph Loeb? Okay maybe I’ll rethink this whole relationship…

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
