You know what this book is? It’s fun. This is big, stupid, and fun comic book. You might not have seen artwork like Leinil Yu’s back in the 1960s but I really think you could have these stories be told during the Golden Age of Marvel. Mark Waid is tapping into what makes Hulk a fun character to begin with all over again: He just smashes the shit out of things.

This is not a ‘Daredevil’ Mark Waid or a ‘Irredeemable’ Mark Waid in these pages. Mark Waid is bring his own brand of action and humor into these pages. Maybe that doesn’t make this the most complicated series at Marvel but who cares? The core of Hulk is just him smashing stuff and I am a-ok with that. So when Waid brings about a stereotypical group of supporting cast, right down to the hick, I don’t mind at all. As long as we have moments for Yu to draw some incredible smashing I don’t care.

The layouts of these pages, oh my god the layouts! I can imagine why Yu was the choice for this series with these incredible pages. At first they are standard when we get all of the exposition set up. But once Banner hulks out? Oh man that’s where Yu’s creativity shines in. Everything just becomes kinetic and Yu uses as many panels as possible in a page to showcase the action. Almost every panel is a poster and while that can sometimes makes the characters stiff with other artists it is never an issue here. It’s gotta be hard for Gerry Alanguilan and Sunny Gho to ink & color Yu’s work in general. But they must be having a lot of fun experimenting with each panel every issue.

Maybe the idea of a robot being controlled by five men, and being called Quintronic Man, sounds stupid to you. But for me this was just so much fun to read I just didn’t care. At this rate we’re not going to get any deep drama here by Mark Waid but that’s okay! He’s showcasing his talent by delivering an action packed and funny issue for the third time in a row. Even if he was writing a more serious take of Hulk here you aren’t really going to complain with Yu’s gorgeous pencils. I have NEVER been a Hulk fan but man this title has quickly change my tune in a short amount of time. Why has it took this long to make Hulk fun again?
