  1. Read the issue again dude.  If Faustus is to believed, the baby was never really there, it was just a dream.

Faustus is a lot of things.  Evil, manipulative, megalomaniacal, yes.  But he seemed so genuine while he was talking to Sharon Carter, that I believed it when he said that the baby was just a dream.

Also, do you really think that Brubaker would kill a baby in almost the same way that Kirkman did mere months ago if there wasn’t some kind of twist?

  2. Well I did read it again, and your right it does seem like this baby wasnt for real….But hey you never know, and you just said it: If Kirkman can kill a baby of his own creation, then what’s stopping Brubaker from doing it?

Either way it’s still risky if we are to assume (fake or not) an unborn baby was killed. He almost crossed the line (not with me but others) that I’m sure would’ve gotten him a ton of crap.

  3. I took what Faustus said as his attempt at doing Sharon a solid. In other words, she did lose the baby, but he’s trying to ease her pain by making her believe it never happened (and maybe also enable her to get past it so she can whoop some Skull butt). But how can we know what part of a lying liar’s lies are true?

Did we ever see any proof of a baby outside of Faustus telling Sharon? Back-issue-diving time!

  4. @patio – I think your take was fine.  I think he was essentially telling her that she should believe that the baby never existed to help her deal with the loss.  If she wasn’t actually pregnant then what did they gain by telling her she was?

  5. @stuclach: Now I’m totally swinging positions again. lol

Yeah I mean didnt Zola and Skull also know the baby exsist? Why on earth would they let someone get rid of their next ‘experiment’ especially if it’s the child of the original Cap…So yeah a baby did die in between these two issues….and the world didnt explode yet….Man Brubaker did cross a line I didnt think could be crossed.

  6. This conversation makes me wonder if the baby was really killed.  I have to wonder if the baby survived the assult and Faustus simply took it and told Sharon that the child never existed (and told everyone else it died) to keep her (them) from seeking it out.  That could partially explain why he is so eager to get the hell out of there and create a distraction with his info leak.  Damn that Brubaker and his ability to make me believe anything is possible in this books.

I still can’t get over the fact that they had those stupid ass flying cars in this issue.  It would have been perfect without those.

  7. It’s no small feat to get me interested in reading this issue without giving away the whole story, but I can always count on @TheNextChampion ! I like your response to the death of Faustus and Sharon’s baby. I’m wondering, if Bucky is trying to fulfill Cap’s role and do what Steve Rogers would want, then is he going to join the New Avengers? Steve would still be a member if he were alive, so is Bucky going to take his place?

  8. Nice review!  This issue was definitely good.  I think the baby really existed and I agree that Faustus was just doing her a solid.  If I can guess right, I think maybe Skull was going to infuse himself into the fetus and then use Zola’s machine to accelerate it’s growth so that he could be born with the Super Soldier serum.

After typing that, I realize that might be completely nutso, but in the most awesome of ways.

  9. @Neb – I think the variety of interpretations we have mentioned in these comments really pays tribute to Brubaker’s skills.

I have no idea which of us is correct, but I am eager to find out.

  10. @stuclach-  Word.  Most likely, it’s none of these things.  This again, pays homage to Bru’s spectacular skill.

  11. @ stuclach – I like your take on Faustus master plan. But I gotta wonder, where is he keeping that baby fetus? In his briefcase? Also, I don’t know about Marvel U. science, but there’s no way that fetus could survive. It couldn’t have been more than a couple months, right? But maybe Faustus is planning on growing a super-soldier stem cell line from the remains. I realize this is getting pretty icky now, so I’ll leave it there.

  12. @ patio – I have no idea how he hid it.  Maybe he hid it in all that beard hair he threw out.  (Now I am getting "icky".)  I don’t really recall how old the fetus was.  It is always hard to keep track of time in comic books.

My little theory is probably completely wrong, but it just popped into my head while reading the rest of the comments.

  13. The beard. Nice.

  14. Didn’t Stark imply something about her being pregnant a few issues back?

I think she was pregnant, and the Skull/Zola took the embryo for incubation out of the womb. That being said, I’m not sure of Faustus’ motives….

  15. Well, that didn’t work. The page is in issue 32.
