So here is my list of comcis from WEEK ONE of the re-boot (best to worst, natch)

1. Animal Man
2. Swamp Thing
3. Action Comics
4. Detective Comics
5. Batwing
6. Justice League
7. Batgirl
8. Justice League International
9. Stormwatch
10. Omac
11. Men of War
12. Static Shock
13. Green Arrow
14. Hawk & Dove

What is surprising to me is how high up on that list Batwing is. I had not excepted to really like the comic. Why? Well shit, how about another list….

Reasons I excepted not to like Batwing:
1. Judd Winick sometimes writes crap.
2. Having a superhero based in Africa is a hard sale. We comic nerds like our heroes hopping from skyscraper to skyscraper.
3. Batwing is such a new character there is no history for us to latch on to.
4. Judd Winick sometimes writes crap.

But this is a solid comic book. I’m digging the mystery of the murdered former Superheroes of Africa. I get a deja vu feeling of The Watchmen when it comes to this – “Someone is picking off costume superheroes”. It was also nice to have Batman around to help out Batwing with some of the investigation and ass-kicking. And dude, there are some fucked up scenes of militated bodies, and who doesn’t like fucked up scenes of mutilated bodies. And the final page, how is Batwing gonna get outta this one?

Stay tuned next month. Same Bat-Time, same Bat-Channel.

All in all The Batwing Team is swinging for the fence on this and playing for keeps. This is a serious fucking comic and one that feels like it is playing out in the real world. A world we may not be too familiar with but are slowly getting to know. I’m sticking around to see where this one goes.

This is DC’s dark horse.

  1. damn spell check got the better of me: that should be “expected” not “excepted”.
