The Best of the Week in Panels – 09.21.2011

Panels should only be used as directed by a licensed physician.

Catwoman #1

By Judd Winick, Guillem March, Tomeu Morey, & Sal Cipriano

Turns out Batman has a little problem with prematurity.

— Josh Flanagan

Hulk #41

By Jeff Parker, Gabriel Hardman, Bettie Breitweiser, & Ed Dukeshire

The most heart-wrenching panel of the entire week of books.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Supergirl #1

By Michael Green & Mike Johnson, Mahmud Asrar, Dan Green, Dave McCaig, & John J. Hill

This was your really well done “oh crap” moment. Wonderful storytelling and color are well on display here.

— Josh Flanagan

Captain Atom #1

By J.T. Krul, Freddie Willams II, Jose Villarubia, & Rob Leigh

Usually when an established artist changes their style it’s a bit of a bummer. Not so with Freddie Williams II. I liked his old style, but it did have a tendency to come off as stiff at times. This new, Francis Manapul-influenced look is wonderful. More of this, please.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Birds of Prey #1

By Duane Swierczynski, Jesus Saiz, Nei Ruffino, & Carlos M Mangual

There was a whole lot of talk about the sexing over of comics this week, but for my money, this panel right here was about the sexiest thing I saw.

— Josh Flanagan

X-Men: Schism #4

By Jason Aaron, Alan Davis, Mark Farmer, Jason Keith, & Jared K. Fletcher

Oof. There is so much said in this one single silent panel. Lots of comics these days are over-written and don’t let the art do the heavy lifting. Not so here. Cyclops has traveled a lot of miles since that picture was taken, and most of them haven’t been good. Jason Aaron could have hit you over the head with that in a few captions but instead Alan Davis says all that needs to be said.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Wonder Woman #1

By Brian Azzarello, Cliff Chiang, Matthew Wilson, and Jared K. Fletcher

This panel captures so much excitement and movement in one single image. This is the first time we see Wonder Woman in action and it’s an expertly realized introduction.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Wonder Woman #1

By Brian Azzarello, Cliff Chiang, Matthew Wilson, and Jared K. Fletcher

I tried to pick a part of this page, but I couldn’t do it. If you’ve ever wondered what really good sequential storytelling is, this is what it looks like. It’s also a pretty top notch tutorial on taking on a centaur.

— Josh Flanagan

Captain America #3

By Ed Brubaker, Steve McNiven, Jay Leisten, Justin Ponsor, & Joe Caramagna

It’s not so easy to throw that mighty shield, is it?

— Conor Kilpatrick

Batman #1

By Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion, FCO Plascencia, Richard Starkings, & Jimmy Betancourt

It takes a lot of skill to do a layout like that, and have it work. I could look at this all day.

— Josh Flanagan

Comments

  1. Every single panel above is fantastic. So much great art, especially Chiang and Asrar. These are great examples of why it is a great time to be a comic fan. Or a centaur hater.

  2. I think many people are misreading the “it doesn’t take long” line. The whole lead up to this line in the inner dialog is about how Batman resists Catwoman’s advances at first but finally gives. But ultimately “It doesn’t take long” until they’re banging.

  3. I’d give anything to see a Jason Aaron and Alan Davis X-men First Class book.

  4. That Hulk panel caught me off guard when I was reading the book; all of a sudden I had to put the book down. Probably my favorite moment in a comic this year.

  5. I love the Cap page, but doesn’t it look like she is holding it in her right hand but then throws it from her left? Or am I looking at it wrong?

  6. Well said on the Batman #1 panel Josh!

  7. Josh: was that Birds of Prey panel the sexiest thing or the most sexist thing. I’m confused and scared because I might be feeling the wrong thing.

  8. We finally see where the mustache goes.

  9. Am I crazy or is there something weird going on with Cyclops’s nose in that otherwise great panel?
I also loved the sequence of the last four panels before the Cyclops/Wolverine fight.

  10. Glad to see supergirl get some love. I hope this comic is almost as good as powergirl

  11. whats up with cyclops’ nose in that panel, it looks odd

  12. How did you guys get a hold of a picture with me and my leather bound girlfriend making out?! How embarrassing.

  13. I find it amusing that you guys complained that the first issue of Catwoman was nothing but sex, yet you choose one of those panels as one of your panels of the week.

  14. Nice panels, many from books I did not read! Thanks as always, guys!

Gotta put in my lot, though, for the Avengers/X-Men 2-page spread in Avengers: Children’s Crusade. Made me fanboy all over the place.

  15. Good choices, but I think my favorite panel was the shot of Batman in the air with the caption: “I need some fresh air”.

God that got me excited for the future of the book with Capullo’s art.

  16. I like that Captain America one. The series of panels are great, because the ending with the shield came as a surprise amazingly…even though it’s on the same page (following the shields flow around the page did the trick). And the “CHKK” and then the “crap…” was also great.

  17. I can’t wait to go get my books tomorrow and read Wonder Woman and Batman. That centaur fight sequence is like a tiny little class on sequential story telling. Perfection.

  18. Did the scariness of Joker’s teeth in Batman catch anyone else off guard? I was pretty shocked at how horrifying he looks in that issue. Not that it will deter me from sticking on. I’m sucked in to this book like a beer gut in a wedding photo.

  19. Can’t stand Williams’ art in Cap Atom. The only thing worse was the flat, emtionless story.

Loved the Suoergirl panels. Josh nailed it.

My favorite panel was the shot of Bruce, Dick, Tim, and Damian together, each in their tuxedos, and Damian in a pair of Converse.

    • Did their ages not look accurate to you? Bruce looked to be about 25, Dick looked 17,and Tim looked about 15. Is this the new DCU “de-aged” standard, or did Capullo just render them younger looking than normal?

  20. wow, this is my favorite weekly panel this month. everything looks great. thanks

  21. All panels unrelated to Hulk’s mustache are useless to me.

  22. This might be the best “best week in panels” I’ve seen in a while. So much talent on display.

  23. I love that Captain America panel… It’s always fun to see the panels that show that the power or ability a person has isn’t as easy as we might hope it is. In that respect it reminds me a bit of a panel many years back, where Green Arrow has to use G.L.’s ring and only just barely puts together a construct.

  24. Love this column and would like to see Cap Atom w more of the Manapul art, might keep this book on the shelves.

  25. I’m sad I only bought 2 of these books.

  26. +1 on that Batman panel. THAT was the sexiest thing going on this week for sure.

  27. That Catwoman panel is a guarantee that our children will be able to enjoy GREAT MOMENTS IN COMICS HISTORY in the future. Thanks DC for thinking about the children.
