As someone who just recently bought (and really likes) the new Guns N Roses album, I can't help but think that Liefeld is like the Axl Rose of comics.  He is very polarizing, he had a famous split with his partners, and has sort of disappeared for an extended period based on a lot of money made early on, etc.  So I gave Axl another shot, I may here as well.

I find it interesting to look back at Youngblood like this.  I was a few years older than Ron in 1992. but was still a fairly young comic reader.  I recall loving the art of all the image guys but thinking that almost all were just horrible writers.  Ironically the ones that could write (Liefeld and Valentino in my mind) also were the worst artists of the bunch.  So I never felt that early Image worked for me, you either had georgeous art and bad writing or vice versa.  

I am interested to see a good writer tackle these pages and may check it out.

August 19, 2008 10:11 pm I love this piece.  However, DUDE you cannot think that Islands of Adventure didnt make it.  It is still there and is huge. I could live on Marvel Super Hero Island.  It is probably the coolest place on the friggin' planet.  I just got back from there in July and it you don't make a trip down there every few years just to eat burgers in the Baxter Building or the Captain America diner then I am dissapointed ...

August 16, 2008 7:36 am Good review.  I think your assesment is spot on.  The art and tone of the book seemed to be ahead of the story at most times.  If this story has a good payoff in the long run and catches up to the art it could end being very satisfying.

I love that they have final crisis on a 6 week schedule, that way it always comes out when Conor is picking.

I loved Michael Turner's art and will miss him greatly.  I loved Identity Crisis and thought that his covers were awesome.  It was one of those times where a special cover really worked and made the entire event more special.  His Wonder Woman cover was just too cool for school and I ate it up.

I am glad that we had Michael's talent but sad that it wasn't for longer.
