March 2, 2010 2:11 pm I really enjoyed what Urasawa brought to this classic story, remixing it with some Asimov, Shirow, and PKD to heighten the atmosphere and themes that Tezuka pioneered with the Astro Boy saga.  Japanese manga continues to innovate, if not in the mechanics of comic book storytelling, at least in exploring complex themes of identity, culture, politics, and technology.  Thanks for sharing this with the iFanboy community, Paul!

@drakedangerz The beams are Darkseid's Omega Effect (aka Omega Sanction).  What's useful about them is that they've done many different things over the years, even when Kirby first introduced them.  They don't simply kill you, which could explain why Morrison said that Batman would meet a fate worse than death.

Check out this panel from The New Gods Vol. 1

January 14, 2009 12:10 pm I loved this issue, particularly the ending.  I felt it was very appropriate to the characters, and leaves several doors open for the future.  I'm really excited to see Morrison weaving a new fabric for DC out of the existing characters, and breathing new life and relevance into Kirby's New Gods.  I was skeptical, particularly with Mister Miracle, but now I'm sold!
December 15, 2008 3:29 pm Done!  Your services are easily worth my $4 a month.  Here's to hoping that I can move up to $10 sometime soon.
September 26, 2008 3:03 pm This was my pick only because of the cock and balls.  Tony Harris should call up Prism comics STAT!
August 21, 2008 11:54 am This book was incredible!  I hope they get this creative team to do the regular book.  So much better than the confusing crap that's been going on over there.
August 21, 2008 11:52 am Did any stores actually get this book?  Two of the stores near me did not receive this book.
June 4, 2008 6:15 pm I loved that this tied in with the Kirby stuff and parallels some themes in DCU #0 and Final Crisis.

The bit with Superman talking about the New Gods wasn't written the best to tie in with Starlin's Death of the New Gods.  I don't think you have to make a point to mention it, but Supes could have said something that indicated his belief that those Gods were all dead.

Also, the only thing that really ties in from Seven Soldiers is the Mister Miracle series.  I think part of Final Crisis will be his chance to make a more sensible draft of the story found therein.  So long as I don't see it spelled "Motherboxx", we're cool.

Good first issue.  Now who's the character at the end and what's on his hands?
