October 27, 2011 6:04 pm There's a difference between hearing "that little voice" critique other people and writing an article about it for those people who are potentially being critiqued to read. For the record, I don't critique the way anyone dresses. Ever. I think it's childish. I think it takes balls to get up, put on clothing and leave the house knowing that someone, somewhere at some point will be judging you, but we all do it anyway and some of us do it with less reservation than others. I don't care if you look like you stepped out of a J Crew catalog or a scene from the film Pretty in Pink; if you own it, you own it and I respect that.

Well, I'm not going to be as...filterless...as some of the other commenting users....but I have to say, we don't all have the money to support getting extremely accurate costumes for Halloween or for cosplaying in general. I submit my photo for the iFanbase halloween page every year, and every year it's a costume compiled of mostly stuff I already own but hope conveys what I'm going for. I'm going as Batgirl this year. Not quite Babs, not quite Cassie (I wish!) but some hybrid of the character's different incarnations over the years because I can't afford a bodysuit and zentai mask and gloves with spikes and stuff. I can't even afford Steph's cowl. So I'm wearing my PVC leggings and shrug, a swimsuit with a logo sewn on, a metal wrist cuff that really has nothing to do with Batgirl but looks pretty superhero-y, shorts, and the two things I actually bought this year for the costume - the black domino mask and the yellow utility belt. That's it. That's all I could really afford. Last year, I bought a men's t shirt and took it in for my Wolverine costume. Talk about character inaccuracies! Halloween is my favorite holiday, hands down. If it causes someone to have a love-hate relationship with the holiday when I wear basically my clothes assembled differently, well, I hope that someone can get over it and enjoy themselves. I can enjoy it enough for both of us!

1 - i was really never teased in grade/high school for reading comics.  this may have something to due with the fact that i had a bad reputation as the girl who would kick your ass for looking at her sideways (which was only partially deserved), but i think it's more that no one cared or really thought it was that dorky.  if anything, i got more balking from the comic book community because i was a girl into comics.  positive balking, but balking still.

2 - i understand being defensive over something that you love fiercely when it becomes suddenly "cool" and other people jump on and get overenthusiastic about it in a way that seems disingenuous.  a personal example of this is when i was speaking with some people after the movie sin city came out and one guy was like "yeah i just picked up the most recent issue, it's still really great."  for all i know this dumbass could have thought that trades were issues?  and thought that by picking up the last trade he'd gotten the latest issue?  i don't know.  a few people in the group taunted him and set him straight, i didn't need to.  either way, it's still no reason to be less than welcoming about a shared passion, especially if someone is new to it and could use the guidance.  what irritates me about this is that it seems that it's a really sexist debate.  why is it that hot women can't be into comics but hot guys can be? 

that said, i think booth babes are fucking stupid (the idea of booth babes and the utilization of, not the women themselves being paid to model and feign interest) and i was pretty miffed when modest mouse started putting out super pop albums and everyone and their sister fell in love with them, so i can't really talk.  i'm biased.


i can probably still kick your ass, though.  the general you.

May 5, 2011 1:10 pm I totally agree with Wolverine.  He'd be perfect for me; we'd basically leave each other alone most of the time and he'd most likely be cool with me hooking up with girls (specifically Selina, as long as we are talking fantasy) on the side.  All I need in a dude is a sense of humor and some body hair, which leads me to my second pick -

Kurt Wagner.  It would be incredibly short-lived (and I am SO not into skinny guys) but fun while it lasted.  Maybe he'll be my rebound when Logan and I call it quits.

I would ultimately settle down with Lois Lane.

March 18, 2011 2:52 pm I think MAC's point of view and voice is very far from the traditional "buy our products and you'll be beautiful" campaigns that most mainstream cosmetics companies trot out.  Think of the ads you see on television and in ads for Revlon, Maybelline and the like - the focus is almost always on "looking flawless" or "you can't guess her age" or something similar.  It's always about hiding wrinkles and imperfections and complementing your skin tone and all that garbage.  MAC is mostly about being bold, theatrical and expressive. 

I rarely wear make up as it is because a. I am lazy b. I never really learned how to apply it and c. I am against an industry that so thoroughly exploits animals, HOWEVER I feel like MAC's ad campaigns are the ones I can usually get behind.  I don't appreciate the implication that women without make up are "plain janes," but I don't think it is meant to be taken as "if you don't wear this you aren't sexy."  I think it's more about being bold and glamorous and indulgent and ridiculous, which I can feel because that's usually how I dress.   As a woman, I'm really not offended by this campaign and I dig the packaging and marketing of the WW stuff.  WW is not the only woman to get this treatment, either - they did a line of DIsney villainness characters' thematic colors, also, earlier this year.  I didn't buy that and I won't buy this  (because I couldn't tell you the last time I bought a lick of make up at all) but I think the idea is kind of cool. 

For the record - "those types" of women who hate being objectified deserve to be displeased until objectification comes to an end.  For both genders.

so I am way late on posting this, but if you guys wind up at Reggie's and you're hungry, I hear that their food is really really good, particularly the chicken wings.  I can't say from experience but I know people who go there just for the food and it is kind of out of the way if you're not in the south loop.

 

SO support them and eat their food because I like going there and I want them to stay open forever.
