May 18, 2012 11:14 am You guys, is Francesco Francavilla coming on to Josh?
January 12, 2012 4:14 pm I'd prefer Rice to U of H as it's more photogenic, but no slight meant against the Coogs. Hey, I'll just be pleased to see the occasional scene involving Whataburger or Ninfa's Original [Restaurant] on Navigation - or even better, a shot of the Wortham Center downtown (with Buffalo Bayou in the scene) where I work. Otto's BBQ would be a nice touch as well. Now I'll have to start reading this thing...

November 4, 2011 7:21 pm Tradd's stuff only strengthens my opinion that un-inked pencils are almost always superior looking to their inked/colored final counterparts. Fantastich!
September 21, 2011 12:31 pm I've always loved the Silver Surfer. Something about the simplicity of the character design and his inherent dignity. He never seems to get much love from the comic book fanbase at large, which I think is a shame. As for an artist, I really liked his look from the Thor comic that Coipiel worked on. He had a certain something that most people seem to lack. Either that or the amazing fluidity of Eric Canete's work would do the Surfer justice in my mind, with writing by Abnet and Lanning, of course.
September 9, 2011 2:42 pm Yeah, I gotta tell ya, I choked up a bit on that one. Otherwise, Eric Canete continues to draw his ass off. Though for my money, the sweetest Conan The Barbarian sketch would surely come from the hand of Olivier Coipel.
September 8, 2011 8:04 pm I can only add that when I got issues #404-407, when I paid for a year's subscription to the comic book the year after I graduated high school, when I pulled them out of their packaging, I was in awe of Mazzucchelli's artwork. I thought it was amazing how he conveyed so much detail with so few lines (I thought the coloring was fantastic, too). I consider those issues and that story to be a modern masterpiece of comic booking, particularly in the world of Batman comics. I still get flashes of some of the panels in my head sometimes (Miller's dialogue seemed more appropriate than in The Dark Knight Returns; didn't seem so over the top): "There are 12 working defenses from this position..." (my memory is crap nowadays, but I think that was the gist of it), and the classic shot of Batman sneaking out of the building in that swarm of bats. Just amazing!
September 7, 2011 2:21 pm As a comic book fan, and a hard rock/heavy metal music fan, I've entertained ideas of an updated Heavy Metal movie for years. I've even kept a running a list in my head of great tunes for it, as I believe the music is as important to the final product as the animation, in keeping with the original movie's vibe. Paul Pope being involved is a fantastic choice - as is Peter Chung (Aeon Flux), Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter's Laboratory), Christian Volckman (Rennaisance) and either Hiroyuki Kitakubo (Blood: The Last Vampire) or Mamoru Oshii (Ghost In The Shell). An artful blending of cel animation with modern technology would be utterly amazing, I'm sure of it, against the backdrop of a fantastic soundtrack. As long as we keep the underlying narrative of the Loc-Nar wreaking havoc on unsuspecting victims, I really think it's time for a new anthological installment in the saga of "the sum of all evils".
September 1, 2011 5:44 pm Totally! I loved that one full page shot of Superman saying "What can you do?" with that grin on his face. I thought this whole issue was a great start. I love that the setup has them meeting each other for the first time and discovering each other's power sets. That one panel of the week entry with Batman and Green Lantern was great even though it wasn't able to show the build up to it where Green Lantern was giving Batman shit for having no powers. I was grinning the Geoff Johns in an iFanboy interview (zing!).
August 19, 2011 2:03 pm Cool, so Travis is still drawing? Seemed like he dropped out of the scene a while back and I lost track of him. Grifter was a cool character as designed/drawn by Jim Lee, but Travis really made him into a bad ass with his amazing cinematic art style. His art is like screen captures from a lost John Woo movie.
