The first phrase that popped into my head seeing this was "same shit, different smell".

Hopefully DC runs with that for their marketing campaign.Seriously though, why these two again?.Clearly because they sell but....YAWN!!! I don't think its a co-incidence that there has been more excitement recently over books like Detective Comics and Batman & Robin than there has been over things like Superman: Secret Origins.

November 25, 2009 12:56 am @HailScott: I think you've hit the nail on the head in terms of peoples perception of this.It is odd though, while it explores issues of a real country it is very much a construction and ultimately as unreal as anything in a superhero comic. Its a strange phenomenon that if superheroes and villians tear each other apart no one gets depressed about mortality but link it to real life issues and suddenly people complain its depressing.

Does she have two eggs strapped to her chest or is that a really nasty outfit? Odd.

I think it could be a case that comics advertising doesn't target children as much partly due to availability shifting the demographic.I know in Australia newsagents no longer sell Marvel or DC comics whereas when I was growing up most used to sell a wide range of titles. Most suburbs have at least 1 newsagent, often more. Now you generally have to visit a comic shop to buy comics and kids can't easily take themselves off to the local comic shop.I think in the whole Sydney area (a very large area) there are maybe 4 comic shops as opposed to the hundreds of newsagents. If their parents aren't interested in comics they probably have a hard time convincing them to go buy a few comics, especially when just buying 4 adds up to a significant purchase these days.Still, maybe its very different in America and my theory is wrong.

November 4, 2009 7:30 am Lee Loughridge is colouring this? It may seem like a silly question but can someone comment on the colouring after they read it? I was dumb enough to move to a rural area where the nearest comic shop is 4 hours drive away...no more single issues for me :-(

I know it sounds like a self-help term but I use "baby steps" to help me overcome the Fear.Even if I only spend 5 minutes every few days trying (in my case drawing) I know I've done something and I often keep going. It doesn't matter if I don't.I have also thrown out all expectations for what I do....it doesn't have to be perfect or finished, its just nice to do something.

I also set small easily completed projects like taking a photo of some scenery that I can work from as reference material.Creativity is a job in itself, those of us whose creative passion isn't the job we spend significant hours at to pay the rent shouldn't beat ourselves up over not having achieved our dreams already.

Scalped trade,woohoo!

BQ:Luckily I had a gym membership the last time my hot water wasn't working.Which doesn't really answer the question.

I feel like I should preface all my comments with how much I enjoy Sonias articles but can't help but think it'll get repetitive, bordering on sycophantic if I say it every week.So just for the record even when I voice any different opinions I appreciate your work Sonia.

I think part of the problem with bad clothing choices has to do with it being a medium of fantasy and I think a lot of the choices are a window into what some males would like to see women walking around in.I think it shows too in breast size and amount of cleavage shown.I can't even think of 1 flat chested superheroine off the top of my head, yet I can name at least 5 ladies in my everyday life with modest chests.

Scalped and DMZ.Is another Guerrillas coming out any time soon? Maybe I missed one.

BQ: I can play violin at an intermediate level.I taught myself over a number of years with a digital tuner and a series of books.I tried to only practise when flatmates weren't home because it wasn't pretty in the early years, thats for sure.Plus listening to someone practise scales for half an hour is really really tedious. The whole thing was an interesting challenge though,I strongly believe anyone can do anything they want if they put their mind to it.

I guess as a general rule most of us got into comics or comic book characters as kids or early teens.I think at that point it is probably about connecting with the power fantasies and the disconnect from reality was a type of empowering thing.

Maybe creators are still in touch with that to a large degree, having had the seed planted in their youth from a long line of stories about heroes, from ancient myth to the stories of heroes in wars throughout the ages to cowboy stories and pulps then on to superheroes.I guess I see the impulse to create these stories (and read them) more as a response to fairly normal insecurities in a persons life rather than having anything to do with insanity, however minor or brief it may be.
