August 9, 2012 12:08 am Yes, the cover is a little out of place. Nonetheless, I loved this issue. Scenes like this are what everyone dreams about when they hear about alternate reality crossovers. I'm reminded of the Uncanny X-Force issues when Logan goes to Age of Apocalypse and meets alive versions of Jean, Nightcrawler, and his daughter. So much emotion to be had, and this issue definitely provided it. I really liked Bendis' dialogue in this issue, particularly between the young Gwen and Peter when they all find out about their alternate versions. The star of the book though, is Sara Pichelli. That Aunt May frame with the tear down her eye -- amazing, amazing moment. I do agree thought, that at 80% into the series, it feels like we haven't seen enough of these moments. Perhaps this is just the start of a continuing series of Ultimate/616 crossovers and Marvel doesn't want to blow their load in 5 isssues?
August 9, 2012 12:01 am Agreed. Not a fan of the Cloonan. Felt like I was reading Scott Pilgrim at times. The Andy Clarke pages though were spectacular. Fit the gritty and adult tone of Gotham to a tee. Would love to see his ultra-detailed style in a full run on this book in the future. I enjoyed this story even more so than some of the Court of Owls chapters. The ability to follow the narrative from a commoner grounds the story and makes Batman's brief appearances that much more mysterious. Gotta admit that the whole homophobic bullying thing seems a bit cliched by this point, but I still had a lot of fun getting through this issue.
August 2, 2012 2:07 am I'm waiting for more reviews before deciding to pick this up. I was really turned off by the Rorschach scenes in the last issue. Side note, cool to see both Kuberts in big titles this week.
August 2, 2012 1:57 am 5 stars. This issue was a huge rebound for me. Firstly, the story. This was packed with forward moving momentum unlike the past two issues. We see Spidey's shining moment of the series, which I felt Aaron wrote very faithfully to the character. We also get the continued downward spiral of Emma (that scene at the dinner table was sick), the implosion of Illyana/Colossus, the reactions of non-Phoenixed X-Men, and even a divorce from Panther/Storm. Compared to some of the others in the series, this felt like giant-sized issue, but yet it was still 22 pages. Second, I thought Kubert's art was way better in this issue than the last. I thought his character looked more detailed and less sloppy. The renditions of limbo were also great. Also gotta give it up to Jim Cheung/Mark Morales/Justin Ponsor for the awesome cover. Perhaps this one has been my favourite of the series. Finally, the AR app! I'm so glad that they finally decided to upgrade the video quality so that when I view the line art it doesn't look like it was recorded on a 2004 cell phone. Also, I really like the addition, albeit brief, of voice-overs for Peter's thought bubbles. And of course, the Aaron interview is great. Would be even better to hear from Kubert or other members of the creative team in future AR applications. A good quality issue. Wish Aaron or Hickman could've written this entire series.
July 24, 2012 12:25 am Dean White got fucked here in the credits. He is the colorist of the issue. Lowe tweeted his apologies.
July 23, 2012 11:21 pm First Before Watchmen book I'm skipping. Didn't quite dig the first issue. If I read good reviews I may change my mind.
July 8, 2012 1:39 am My favourite Before Watchmen book thus far as well. Best art of the entire series, and a story that felt substantial enough to make the $4 worthwhile.
July 4, 2012 11:25 pm Attempting to use the AR app for this continues to be an unbearable test of my patience. Was not able to get any of the AR to work on left-sided pages, and when they do all I get are shitty low-res "pencil-to-print" images or cheap "special effect" animations (Namor face-shards twirling around and fading to black -- WOW, what great 21st century effects!). If tech is this low-rent and shoddy, it would've been best not to debut it at all.
June 21, 2012 1:33 am I'm not a big indie comic reader but decided to take a chance on this after seeing it as POTW for so many weeks. Needless to say, I'm glad. Beautiful, clear and emotive art. Witty and realistic dialogue. Relatable characters. Even the To Be Continued column was thoroughly entertaining this week. Really cool of Vaughan to read every one of those letters. I think I'd like to be friends with him.
June 20, 2012 10:21 pm And having just finished the Infinite issue... GO AND DOWNLOAD THIS. I can't say the tech was utilized as well as the first issue, but I enjoyed the story much more. Goes way deep into the mind of Scott in a very "Dr. Manhattan On Mars"-like scenario. This was wonderful. Enjoyed it more than the issue itself.
