Ultimate X #1
begins the bi-monthly mystery series that brings the mutant corner of
Marvel’s Ultimate Universe back to the spotlight. Following the events
of Ultimatum, mutants are more hated than ever (thanks to the
actions of Magneto), so things don’t look good for 16 year-old Jimmy
Hudson when Kitty Pryde pays him a visit and reveals that which his
parents have kept secret: Jimmy is the only son of the mutant
Wolverine.
No one seems to know the identity of Jimmy’s mother, but what is known is this: he is very much his father’s son; he has Wolverine’s healing factor, agility, and bone claws. Jimmy, however, has one power his father lacked: the ability to form metal over the claws. Could this be a trait passed down from his mother? Or is it something different entirely? The title’s mysterious nature and bi-monthly schedule ensure we will have the answer no time soon.
The wait will likely be more than worth it, as at the title’s helm is Jeph Loeb at his best—creating new mysteries in what feels like a very personal story of hope. Loeb has in recent years been the recipient of much criticism, most notably for his work on Ultimates 3, Ultimatum, and Hulk. While I cannot speak of his efforts on the former series (as I’ve not read them), I can and will proclaim now my love for the action and mystery of Hulk. While Hulk can be described as a “popcorn comic” for its recurring focus on big action, Ultimate X sees Loeb’s attention centered on the personal aspects of the story. He delivers 100% and has me waiting anxiously for the next chapter.
In the art department we’ve Arthur Adams providing pencils; accompanying him are Aspen MLT’s Peter Steigerwald and Mark Roslan, colorist and inker respectively. Aside from his work on the aforementioned Hulk, I am not familiar with Adams but I am very much impressed by his style’s consistency and unique quality, both of which are only aided by the colors and digital inks of Steigerwald and Roslan (both of whom are even more unfamiliar to me but nevertheless quite good).
Put it all together and what you get is a new series that is like nothing else in the Ultimate line or comics in general.
What is Ultimate X?
The answer is: something special.
Art: 5 - Excellent
Even though I can’t agree with anything you said your review was very written.
Good lord, I guess he shouldn’t read Ultimate Spider-man or it’ll blow his mind, literally.
Hooray! I’ve actually found someone else who doesn’t hate Jeph Loeb’s HULK! A rare breed we are.
