  1. Loeb ought to stick with Batman all of his Marvel stuff blows chunks.  I agree with everything you just said.  So glad I skipped this.

  2. I don’t believe that they ever promised "very accurate continuity" in the Ultimate books. That would be an impossible thing to promise since it is an impossible thing to achieve. What they did promise was books that would be free from the decades of old Marvel continuity.

  3. Promised or Not they use to have spot on continuity (with exception of 1 issue of Ult. Marvel TeamUp). But Loeb throws it all out the window. He did it in Ultimates 3 & hasn’t stopped since.

  4. Also did anyone see the New Ultimates preview were he gives the Ult. Defenders powers.  Yep lets take away the whole reason why they were cool & make them look almost exactly like their 616 counterparts.  That the one thing I truly hate about Loeb Ult. books.

  5. lantern4life you and me. We’re going to get along just fine.

Also Conor, by promise I meant "what it stood for". Like lantern4life said, it had been spot on and had the potential to be alot like Stan Lee’s works in terms of keeping tightly woven a nice continuity or at least continuity that intertwine with one another in a consistent basis. Four books aren’t hard to keep connected if you’re just writing one of them. He should have stayed away from writing the other books since it doesn’t look like he’s putting ANY real effort in Ultimate X. He should have had his full attention on Ultimate X or not work on the book at all. But then again I live in an ideal world where things have potential to be fruitful.

  6. @lantern4life – Are you forgetting the 2-issue Mike Allred Ult. Iron Man origin in Ult. MTU? Doesn’t quite gel with the Ult. Iron Man minis. But since that was written first, that means that both of those minis are ret-cons and inaccurate continuity. Lawyered!

@mangaman – In your review, you say that "not even the art could save" this book, implying the art was good, but you still didn’t like the writing. So, why a 2? If this was in fact written as badly as Ultimatum, I would probably give the writing a 1 and the art a 5. Nevermind that I completely disagree with your evaluation of Loeb’s writing on many points, Art Adams is someone that you can depend on time and time again to deliver amazing pencils.

This book is what the Ultimate U. is ALL ABOUT! Wolverine gave his adopted son up to the Hudsons, who are not connected to any Canadian super teams, and the kid has naturally ocurring metal claws? He’s already cooler than Daken after just one issue!

  7. @conor & lantern4life: It makes me wonder if loeb ever reads the books on series that he takes over.  However, I know this book is a fresh start.

  8. @ActualButt: Let me clarify. I mean the art from Art Adams TENDS to be really good. But it just doesn’t work with the feel of Ultimate X-titles. I understand Loeb was going for a Preacher-look. But the approach he’s taking to accomplish that is a far departure from where all the other titles are headed in the same Universe. His art style here just doesn’t fulfill that purpose neither does he knock the splash pages out of the park. If you’re going to draw an unncessary page, make it kick ass, which he did not. In comics most people tend to distinctly segregate story and art. While I do not, the two (writer and artist) must coincide in a cohesive fashion in order to convert what’s in their minds on that paper with as much percentage accuracy as they are able to. Art Adams can do better than this, even worse, I KNOW he can and I only have a few issues where I’ve seen it. He’s a great artist who has the ability to knock this stuff out of the park and he did not which is why he get’s a 2. Thanks for making me distinct.

  9. @ActualButt: "Wolverine gave his adopted son up to the Hudsons". It’s a boring retcon that happened already in the 616. "and the kid has naturally ocurring metal claws". That’s the one way to get me to skip an arc.

  10. @ActualButt: Bendis has said in interviews that all issues with the exception of the last issue featuring the Fantastic four in Ult Marvel Team Up are in continuity.  Also the Iron man in question yes doesn’t gel do to the Tony in UMTU is much older than the adolescent Tony in Orson Scott Card’s mini’s.  Wow I guess you are an Actual Butt.

  11. @Mangaman: I appreciate that you evaluate the art as it relates to the story, as well as how it relates to the brand.  Not many people evaluate art apart from "Wow, that looks pretty."

  12. @akamuu: thank you man. I try to articulate where I’m coming from in terms of grading and you hit the nail on the head. Most people probably think I don’t appreciate art, I really do. I love art for what it is; however, the comic industry capitalizes on story telling and that’s what it’s all about so this is why I appreciate art that focuses on *logical story telling and hey if the art is beautiful that’s a bonus. Even if you draw stick figures and tell a great story I’ll be willing to give that person a 5 in writing so long as I can clearly understand what’s happening and why.

*logical is used very loosely. I’ll suspend my disbelief if there’s any pay off in the end.

  13. @lantern4life – Just because Bendis said it, doesn’t make it true, or impervious to retcons. The reason the two Ult. Iron Man stories don’t gel is because they tell completely different origin stories. The Ult. MTU is closer to classic Iron Man continuity. Did you read it?
