Sweet Tooth is a series that has interested me up to this point, but not completely captivated me like I thought that it was going to. That said, I believe this book will be getting much better starting with the next issue. It seems that these first three were simply an introduction to the world that Jeff Lemire really wanted to delve into, and it really seems great.

First off, I’ll say this book has seemed to become a mix between two of my favorite books of all time. It’s has the atmosphere and setting similar to that of TheWalking Dead and the father/son relationship quality of The Road, a novel by Cormac McCarthy. That relationship is what Lemire is really pushing to drive this book, and in several ways, it’s working. It’s really great to see Mr. Jeppard be a very cold and tough person, but yet still be caring towards Gus. His caring for Gus is something that isn’t shown outright, because he often has a very harsh demeanor towards him, but you can always see that Gus is like a son to Jeppard, as he tries to teach Gus lessons, and keep him safe. Basically, what I’m trying to say is that this relationship between Jeppard and Gus could turn into something truly fantastic and emotional throughout the series.

The world of Sweet Tooth had been pretty mysterious up to this point, with only small revelations of what was happening in the world around Gus. This issue, we get to see what it’s truly like outside of “the woods” where Gus has spent his entire life. I’m really forward to the imagery shown by Lemire in future issues, just becasue the atmosphere of the new world is so rich in the ways it can be shown and portrayed through his drawing. It’s a very good atmosphere for a book to have, in my opinion. There are just so many things you can do with it to evoke the emotions of the reader.

Overall, this was a very good issue, and it seems to only be getting better from here. I look forward to next month, when Lemire should provide more stunning imagery of this world, and provide some information about the cliffhanger at the end.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. Great review.

I didnt really see the connection of ‘The Road’ until this issue. I just wish this Mr. Jepperd guy was a bit more interesting.

  2. "Basically, what I’m trying to say is that this relationship between Jeppard and Gus could turn into something truly fantastic and emotional throughout the series."

He could also be taking Sweet Tooth somewhere horrible … we don’t know, yet 🙂

This was a good review of the overall series, but I wish you talked more about why you gave this particular issue’s story a 5/5. I’m liking the series so far, but this issue was way too slow slow slow for me. Nothing happened.

  3. @WadeWilson I guess the reason I gave the story a 5 was because I think it set up something great for future issues. It’s not neccisarily that this issue contained a great narrative, it’s just that it concluded the introduction and is leading the way to the next, (and what seems to be better), chapter of the story.

Truly, the story probably deserved a four or so, just looking at this single issue. I was more thinking of the series as a whole when writing the review.
