I'm liking what Scott Snyder is doing here with Swamp Thing - drawing on the past enough to give us old school Swampy fans something to make us feel all nostalgic. But he also taking a page from the book of Alan Moore and re-inventing this character and making him new and fresh and taking us on a journey that we haven't been on with Swamp Thing before. Issue 2 actually reads like a first issue, wherein we are introduced to Alec Hollands burden and subsequent choices he has to make. We also get a better understanding at the menace that is arising, which seems pretty fucking serious and something that I'm sure is going to sway Alec into making his decision to become Swamp Thing to save the world. But the one thing that really got me with this issue, is Abby coming back. I love this character so much and she is one of my all time favorite female protagonists. I can't wait to see how Snyder handles her and Alec's relationship. It's crazy to think that these two people were in love but really, Abby was in love with Swamp Thing, not Alec Holland. Swamp Thing never was Alec Holland. But now Alec is back amongst the living and still remembers their time together. Does he still have feelings for Abby? Will Abby fall in love with this person she never really knew? A lot of interesting things could happen here. Oh, and a quick side-note: anyone else think for a quick second that was Arseface riding up on the motorcycle to save Alec from the Invunche, oh sorry, I mean those people with their heads turned around backwards wielding axes. Speaking of the Invunche, I'm wondering is this new threat "Sethe" as we learn from the 1940's Swamp Thing visits Alec in this issue, is in any way related or has anything to do with the The Brujería? How about a little Swamp Thing history lesson? The Brujeria were a cruel society of male witches hidden for centuries in Chilóe, in the forests of Patagonia. Ruled by the Council of the Cave, they required new initiates to cleanse themselves of Christian baptism by standing under a waterfall in the Thaiguén River for forty days and nights, catch a skull thrown by their instructors, kill their best friends and sign documents in blood. The Brujería's waste-coats were made from the flesh of disinterred Christian corpses, and their warriors, the Invunche, had their necks and limbs disjointed at age six months. Foreseeing the Crisis on Infinite Earths, the cult summoned forth great evil in order to foster a world-wide belief in the paranormal. Their goal: to call forth the Primordial Shadow, Satan himself, and destroy Heaven. (See issues 37 thru 50 of Swamp Thing Volume 2 for this awesome storyline - American Gothic) Heavy shit man. Heavy shit. Could The Brujeria have been an instrument of Sethe? I'm interested to find out.
