This book proves one thing, and one thing only:  I’m a huge sap.  I am the tree in Aunt Jamima’s backyard, ooze sugary goo until it hurts.  That’s how big of a sap I am.  I should get it tatooed on my forehead.  So, what is it about this book that leads me to such self detrimental talk?

Well, it’s actually kind of hard to explain.  It starts with the fact that while I didn’t find the story in this issue to be all that compelling, I still had a hell of a time with it.  It still left me breathless and wanting more.  But more on that later.

Over the past six issues I’ve been a flip flopper, jumping from the “I love SI bandwagon” to the “SI is a complete disappointment” parade, and with this issue, my soul is torn.  From a storytelling perspective, I felt the story was very disjointed and leaped around too much.  While last issue had some obvious focus, this issue still felt like it was leap frogging.  Last issue we saw Mar-Vel destroying Skrull ships, but in this issue, Noh-Varr appears out of no where and sees him die.  And following that sequence, the panels jump from tie-in book to tie-in book.  While some might appreciate this little touch, I find them useless and unnecessary as even their mentioning does nothing to enhance the story going on in the title proper.  I would have much rather those panels be used for something more worthwhile.

Despite these story missteps, there are some redeeming qualities.  The scene with Thor’s return is excellent as is the Skrulls planning their defensive strategy before all the good guys and bad guys show up to defend Earth.  Also, the battle scenes are fun and well paced.

Now, when we talk about the art, we found out why I taste so good on pancakes.  I’ve made it no secret that I think Yu is drawing the hell out of this book, and a few of his splash pages really shine in this issue.  So, while my brain is having an argument about story and plot points, my heart melts as I see the devastated New York skyline or the assembled heroes or the heroes attacking on the final splash page of the final battle.  It’s awesome, and it makes me weak in the knees just thinking about what the next issues could hold.

So, I’m a sap because I know that this isn’t the best comics in the world, but I am putty in the hands of the creators, the fanboy in me desiring more and more of my heroes kicking ass together.  I can’t wait.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. If anything, the discourse has certainly inspired some wicked reviews thus far. Just look at us, practically coming together like the heroes themselves.

    "IFANBOYS ASSEMBLE!"

  2. Ha!

  3. I thought the same thing when I read this.  I thought, "wow, people are going to have problems with it, but I LOVE it, and I don’t even know why!"

  4. SPOILER ALERT

  5. Legion of Doom assemble!!!!!…..I guess that’s only me -_-;

Another great review as always Neb, good job at pointing out the Mar-Vel death though. I forgot to mention it but that bugged the crap out of me too. What was the point of that whole mini-series with him and him invading Thunderbolts mountain if he was just gonna die pretty much off-panel? Gah.

  6. @Spidey2~  What’s the spoiler?

  7. @Neb, I think Spidey 2 was trying to say your review contained spoilers and wasn’t marked as such … I think.

Regardless, good review: of all the reviews, this one best represents my own flip-flopping between SI "love" & "not-so-much."

I’ve recently come to the conclusion that if the series had been released on a bi-weekly schedule–say with the Mighty Avengers/New Avengers backstory tie-ins released during the off-weeks–no one would be complaining about this title.  Unfortunately, Bendis’s pacing here doesn’t seem to be effective on a monthly release schedule.

  8. I LIKE SI but i don’t LOVE it.  I was really looking forward to this and I am enjoying it but it feels like Bendis’ kind of dropped the ball.  Once this series hit everything came to a hault.  I’m really hoping these last 2 issues are crazy and will be more fun.

  9. @dandoody~  I guess I’m just not sure where I spoiled something.  If I did, I apologize to people.  The only thing can think of is the death of Skrull Mar-Vel, but did anyone really think he would be coming out of this alive?

  10. @Neb, it was just a supposition on behalf of Spidey2; personally, the bit about the Skrull Mar-Vel is such a small part of your review, it didn’t even register that it could be a possible spoiler when I first read it, so I had to go back and re-read your review pretty carefully to find even that one (if indeed, that’s the spoiler Spidey2 was talking about).

  11. oh, and forgive the poor grammar, it’s late & I’m at work waiting for a film to get out.
