My main interest in picking up this book was that Moon Knight was on the team. He’s one of my personal favorite characters, and I’ll buy pretty much anything that he’s a part of. He was a great part of the book, but I’ll get to that later.

First off, I was a little concerned going into this because of Brubaker doing the writing. While I think that he really is an amazing writer, none of the stuff he’s wrote in the last year or so has interested me much at all. So even though I went into it with low expectations, things turned out well. His writing for the issue wasn’t the best I’ve ever seen him, but it was good enough to get the job done. He made a good balance between the characters, and was able to include them all in the issue without any of it feeling forced. He also made good use of the character’s personalities, and utilized little bits of their conversations or flashbacks to each make them feel like themselves. In other words, it was a job well done for Brubaker writing a team book.

This issue started out just as I thought the series should. It was a fast paced action start, and went right into the story. Now this isn’t to say that there was no explanation of the team, because that was all told as flashbacks to the past as each character would come up as it went along. I thought that this kind of opening and storytelling fit the series well, and gave it a good “secret”, or special ops, kind of feel.

Like I said before, Moon Knight was my personal focus of this issue. I wanted to see how he would fit into a team, which he’s never done before in the history of the character (at least to my knowledge). So, and maybe this is just my biased opinion, but I thought the Moon Knight (and Ant Man) part of this was the most interesting. There was an interesting flashback to his recruitment, and also MK and Ant Man seem to make a pretty interesting team.

And now on to the art. I’m not the biggest Deodato fan, but I’m not one of the people that hate him either. Mostly, I just know him from Ellis’ Thunderbolts run, which I thought was good, but thats about it. In this issue, I thought he did a good job with it. He fits the series rather well, as his layouts felt very quick, and action packed, which as I said earlier, is how I think this kind of series should be. All the characters looked good in this, especially Beast and especially Moon Knight (which he made look amazing). My only complaint is that some of his faces and expressions don’t exactly look the greatest. I also want to point out what I think was a good coloring job done on this by Rain Beredo, who made the entire color pallete very dark. In many other books, I dont think it would have worked as much, but it set the tone and mood of this series very well.

So overall, this was a solid book, and I’ll for sure be picking up the second issue.
