I must admit that I am shocked. The last few issues of Mighty Avengers, written by Dan Slott, had disappointed me terribly. I saw the mechanism by which the team was assembled, through an Ersatz Scarlett Witch who was really Loki, a bit contrived.
However, one thing that was likable about this book from moment one was the inclusion of Hank Pym as leader. Pym is a nuanced character. At times he is written as the nerdy genius-level physicist who interacts along the sidelines with Tony Stark, Reed Richards, and their ilk without engaging the baddies as a superhero. However, he has been a superhero since the founding of the Avengers. And some of the greatest Avengers stories have involved Pym as a superhero - either as Giant Man, Goliath, Yellowjacket, and Ant Man. What made those stories great is that Pym is a bit nuts - worse than a wild card, but always on the side of the angels.
In the current issue, Pym and his gang are bouncing throughout an interdimensional space in a broken interdimensional transporter as a result of a recent engagement with Norman Osborn's H.A.M.M.E.R. Now, Pym must repair the transporter or his team will be stranded. He contacts Reed Richards to request, then ultimately demand, a piece of equipment developed by his colleague Goliath II. Reed refuses, suggesting that Pym is not mentally stable enough for the level of equipment needed. The conversation does not end well. So how does Pym handle this rebuke? He plans to invade the Fantastic 4's home - the iconic Baxter Building! The preparations made are quite clever and should lead to a quite amusing and exciting arc.
I would urge those who have abandoned this book to jump back on, if only for this arc. Avengers Assemble!
