As someone who’s never read any Sergeant Rock, I picked up Men of War because it was a number one, and I’m on a bit of a military kick (which has extended to comics) and spent the summer saying things along the lines of, “If Men of War is half as good as its covers, it’ll be a GREAT book.”

This issue didn’t let me down, but it didn’t blow me away, either. It fell a little flat, but I’m hoping that’s just “pilot” syndrome, and next issue when we have Rock in command we’ll start to learn what he’s all about. I think it would benefit from being a little more internal, with more emotion; my biggest criticism is that it was a little bit dry. If issues keep up like this I’ll probably wind up dropping the book, but I can’t imagine they won’t have character development, they’ve begun out two engaging stories, the second a bit more interesting than the first — I can still believe great things will come out of this book. And as for the art? Of my DC Books: Action, Animal Man, Swamp Thing, Green Arrow, and Batgirl — I think it’s the second best I saw this week.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. I got the same exact vibe off this book, serabird. Good review 🙂
I liked MEN OF WAR #1, but for me to be engaged on a monthly basis, this title is going to have to milk these soldiers’ emotion/drama/conflict much more. But there is a certain charm to reading a war comic, period – just as I am sure the charm will be there (however good/bad the issue is) when I read ALL-STAR WESTERN.
