“Men of War” is divided into two sections, the major section was the Sgt. Rock story, with the remainder being the first of a three part Navy SEALs story.

Overall, I was disappointed with the comic, it did not feel, fun or interesting to me.

The dialog throughout the entirety was dry exposition. None of which, being clever, original or entertaining. The point of the story was to give a glimpse of the man who was Rock, while getting him from corporal to sergeant. I don’t feel this was done well at all.

The Navy SEALs section was all exposition chat word balloons and all throw away military speak. This might have been a “comment on politics” piece with the usage of the recently prominent phase “boots on the ground”, but only a remedial attempt at one.

I personally did not like the art at all. In the Rock section, from the poses to the view points to the backgrounds, everything was awkward and flat. I did not care for the colors either. Rock had oddly over-emphasized blue eyes at random times. The rest was mostly mud colored when I don’t feel it had to be.

I did think the penciling was better in the Navy SEALs section, but the action was not conveyed at all. Don’t tell me the squad is taking fire, show me.

I will be avoiding this title in the future. This is a prime example of a comic that makes me not want to spend money on comics. But I do hope Sgt. Rock fans will get a title that they enjoy.
