Both these stories play on tropes we have seen over and over again in classic war stories. Corporal/Sergeant Rock is the classic guy who gets into a fight in every bar, but is a great soldier, so he ends up in a covert unit. The plots introduce our characters, and then throw them into the middle of combat where their buddies start dropping. Classic. The thing that sets this comic apart is that it's a little more realistic than Venom, even though the Sergeant Rock story included a superhuman element, it used more realistic weapons and tactics. They even used radio call signs that made sense. As a currently serving Soldier who understands what fiction is I think there is a level of truth that must be out there to make the characters human and relatable. Without that bit of realism they might as well have a 9 year old pod racing for the love of Natalie Portman. I have to say that I'm kind of interested to see how Superman plays into the mission, and I'd like to see how Ice and the rest of his SEAL team make it out. A solid first issue.
