Alex Ross does art for a JSA title, referencing heavily to my favorite story of all time (Kingdom Come)....and I didnt make it my Pick? What in blue blazes is going on here?

The Gog storyline, after decades upon decades of storytelling (I believe the first time JSA teamed up Gog was mention, check back to correct me if I'm wrong) Johns and Ross are finally done with this storyline. I've been a bit mixed with this over the last couple of issues cause, if you havent realised already, this has been going on longer then most story arcs. But this ending was just a perfect way to end a storyline. All the loose ends are tied up and the one that worried me most, Earth-22 Superman, is handled in the most perfect way.

The final fight itself with Gog is a bit quick, I mean one huge punch by Captial Steel is pretty convinient when he could've done that issues ago. But what saves this issue is the aftermath of the battle. Damage hooking up with Judomaster; Starman acting the best Starman ever; and again Earth-22 Superman is just icing on the cake. Starman, or Geoff Johns...hard to tell who is who now; has given me some of the funniest material for comics and we're only on Day 2 of 2009. Stuff like: 'Yabba Dabba Doo!' or 'This is our earth and we're taking it home' are just lines that'll be with me forever.

It's a shame that Alex Ross will take the majority of the time for the art in one way. Cause Dave Eaglesham gives us the best issue he has ever worked on. Nothing is bad about this issue in terms of the art. Eaglesham's pencils to Massengill's inking is just down right perfect. The closer we got to Ross's pages, the better it seemed the art got. Some of the panels with Gog is just down right breathtaking.

But let's get to the meat of the art, Alex Ross. My non-homosexual love for the man is not a secret to you all. So hearing he was doing original material for this issue was making me giddy. If you think about it at first, the first couple of pages arent that original. They are in terms of that they are flashbacks to 'Kingdom Come' but on a reversed angle; so that makes them original. I thought that it was going to be like this the whole time; dont get me wrong, using the last couple of pages of 'KC' to parallel the end of this story arc is great. But if this was going to be the 'original art' I would've cried foul. (Probably why this isnt my pick because of my quick judgement). But then we get into the flashforwards of Kingdom Come, and then all is forgiven. These panels are just breathtaking, cause being an uber fan of this classic story again make me giddy to learn the fate of Earth-22 DCU. Every time we flashforward it's just another peice of art that should be hanged in a museum. As conor said in his article, that last panel with an aging Superman looking at the reader; simply gorgeous.

So for all the jokes we can make for JSA and the long storytelling; all can be forgiven here. This has been without a doubt, one of the most entertaining runs on a title in years. Yes, Johns is still on this title for a few more issues; but this is a great way to end a classic arc by a gifted writer. Everyone on this entire JSA run from Johns, to Ross, to Eaglesham and Massengill should get the praise they deserve for giving us one of the best team up titles in decades.
