Geoff Johns has consistently been one of my favorite DC writers, and the JSA my favorite super-team since Roy Thomas first introduced them to me in the pages of the All-Star Squadron. I’ll be forever be indebted to Johns for rescuing the JSA from comics’ obscurity and proving the old-timers’ could compete quite handily with the JLA at top of the DC sales chart.
(John’s imminent departure from the book has me already chewing my nails nervously. Will sales slide like the 2008 stock-market? Replacements Willingham and Sturgis’s performance on their last main-stream DC team book, Shadowpact, doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence).
Anywho, JSA #22 is the grand finale to the epic “One World Under Gog” and, having just publicly professed my love for Johns, I can now safely say that this ish was … uh … underwhelming. For a god capable of bringing the dead back to life, Gog’s actually a bit of pansy when the punching starts. In fact, outside of Damage, Starman, Magog and Steel (who gives Gog a mean ole’ shin smack), most of the JSA doesn’t do much in the final battle but hang on the sidelines. In fact, its easy to miss Magog doing his thing and cutting Gog’s head off as its confined to a single panel – come on! That’s cool! Highlight it!
Ugh! After all the time spent building Gog up as a major threat, you’d think the final battle who get more than half an issue. Give me Power Girl barking orders, an air-cav attack (a la the Authority) by Green Lantern, Power Girl, and Superman, some innovative teamwork … in short, make me feel the JSA’s desperation as they take on … a god. I guess this is one of my few criticisms of Johns. While he is a great writer, who can develop incredibly complex and engaging storylines, sometimes the pay-off doesn’t quite hit the mark. That’s not to say, they’re bad – just not epic.
After the battle with Gog, the back half of the issue focuses mainly on getting the Kingdom Come Superman home. It’s more satisfying, but still feels rushed, like it wanted an issue of its own to breath. It’s a shame because there’s lots of interesting things happening, not the least of which is Ross’s incredible drawings of Superman back on the Kingdom Come Earth-22 – these could easily have been full pagers instead of squeezed to halves. I don’t even recall seeing Amazing Man, Lightning, Libery Belle, or Hourman. (Trapping Gog on the source wall, though, was a great touch!)
I guess I’m frustrated (and maybe over-critical) because John’s had laid the foundation for what could have been the best JSA story ever. Instead, it falls short and turns out to be good, rather than great.
