I'll be the first to admit that the first issue of GUARDIANS OF THE
GALAXY confused me. I'm not sure if it was the storytelling style or
the fact that it was introducing a new group of characters to which I
had no previous connection, but I just had trouble following the
story. Cosmic heroes fighting cosmic evil forces; that's about all I
could surmise from the initial installment. This said, I was dubious
when I came across issue #2. Nevertheless, because it was a slightly
meager week at the ol' shop, I figured I'd give the GOTG a second
shot. And for the most part, I'm glad I did. Now generally speaking,
I'm not the biggest fan of the "cosmic" setting and space-based hero
books, but something about this effort took me back to the time when I
picked up my first NOVA book as a kid. Untethered by the conventions
of stories that take place on Earth, this sort of thing offers up
limitless possibilities. Want to beam from one of the universe to the
other in the blink of an eye? These characters can do that. Want to
throw in a chunk of frozen matter from another dimension? It's in
these pages. Still getting a sense of who these characters are and how
they function as a team, but ultimately found the material pretty damn
smart in the way it blends action and a bit of humor. I don't know
where it's all going or if it will mean squat when all is said and
done, but for now I'm content with this title's almost old-fashioned
ways and the infinite possibilties offered in a universe that is
cracking at the seams.
