When Marvel smells a hit on their hands; they go all out on whoring out to the readers.

It must be very strange to anyone working at the company that a character like Deadpool would have such an impact on readers. He became a huge topic for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, instead of the title character; his first self-titled series is going strong on readers; and now he has a film that is set to release during the time their Avengers film will hit. What does this all go too? Well it means we got another ongoing series with the Merc on our hands. But is it really needed?

I’m in my Deadpool tinted glasses people. That is, that I am willing to go out and buy this comic knowning it might be a peice of shit. I mean other then Daniel Way, no one else has written the character well in the past year. I’ve read good things about Victor Gischler and read his first issue of Punisher MAX, which was good. But Deadpool is a hard character to write in terms of comedy, cause no one has made me laugh except for (once again) Daniel Way. Here Gischler seems to be calling back for the days of Joe Kelly, at least when you read this and the backup material of an old Deadpool issue (written by Kelly), it feels like the same Deadpool. Some of the jokes work, some of them didnt. I think Gischler is good at storytelling but is a little hit or miss when it comes to Deadpool’s personality. I certainly love all the jokes involving AIM or Ka-Zar; but the banter with the female scientist is something I could do without. It will be interesting to see how Gischler can handle two Deadpools at once, which isnt a spoiler since the cover shows who the 2nd Deadpool is.

Now Bong Dazo is an artist I have grown to like for the most part. I think his style fits well for the character and it certainly feels like a character at points. He does a great job of changing his style when it comes to the hallucinations, and his action sequences are nice on the eyes. However, his model for Deadpool really throws me off sometimes. I think his Deadpool without the costume looks hideous (this is even with Wilson burned to a crisp) and sometimes it looks like Wilson is wearing a sock instead of a mask. Also I just hate the extra lines to show how muscular the men are in Dazo’s designs. It’s very off putting for me for some reason.

Do we need a 2nd Deadpool ongoing? Probably not. But for a first attempt Gischler and Dazo did a much better job then what others have done with the merc lately (sans Way). I’ll give this first (very long) arc a try. If it doesn’t do anything for me, I won’t mind dropping it. But if the quality can get a little better then this could be another good read for Deadpool and Marvel fans alike.
