You ever read a comic too late in the day? It’s 2:30 in the morning, you’ve been up since 6 a.m. and instead of going to sleep like a normal, healthy person, you’re up trying to cram in one more issue, ’cause you’re not normal or healthy, you’re a fanboy. I did that a few days ago with Thunderbolts #166. After finishing the book, I was so disgusted, I threw the damn thing across the room and swore to drop the title post haste. The next day I was bright-eyed and bushy-eyebrowed, and I realized that I wasn’t fair to Thunderbolts #166. I judged it too harshly due to exhaustion, so I read it again, and it was good.

I almost did the same thing to Daredevil #6.

It was late, I was tired, but I wanted, no, NEEDED to read it. So I did.

This book is so good, even a blurry-eyed, over-worked father of two can see it.

Mark Waid is now, and should forever be, the author of Daredevil’s adventures. Just as Garth Ennis had the perfect voice for the Punisher, and Jason Aaron seems to have the perfect hold on Wolverine (and yes, I know those statements are completely subjective), Mark Waid seems born to write Matt Murdock, Daredevil. In Waid’s hands, Daredevil is a smart, fierce opponent who can beat you with a white billy-club, or talk his way out of a five-sided mexican stand-off. That he threw himself into. On purpose. Waid’s comic book psuedo-science is creative, his dialog is fresh and uncluttered, and his pacing utilizes 22 pages flawlessly. He is an old pro, and each page proves his skill.

Marcos Martin is good with Spider-Man, but he’s great here. His character designs and faces are unique from each other, his storytelling is fluid and his angles are dynamic when they need to be, subtle when they don’t. Martin’s art is clean and he wastes no line. He is as perfect for this book as Waid, which is ironic, considering this is his last issue. Good luck to the artists who have to fill his shoes from here on out.

I don’t usually believe in hype, or blindly follow whatever the majority is holding up as follow-able. It’s not because I’m some kind of rebel, I just rarely think it’s that good, whatever ‘it’ is. In the case of Daredevil #6, the mob wins. 911 pulls for the week is not enough. Give this book a chance if you’re not already reading it. I’m sure there’s some New 52 book you can give up for this worthy cause. I mean, for god’s sake, there’s 52 of them. Just pick one and give your money to Daredevil. I shouldn’t say “you won’t be sorry”, because that’s up to you. But you won’t be sorry.

  1. I love how people gush over this book every week. This has been some of the best Daredevil I have ever read. I don’t want it to end.
