I have enjoyed Blackest Night a great deal, but finally now that we're standing at the end I'm a little underwhelmed. 

My issue is that there was really no point within the series that I understood the rules that this war of light was being fought by.  The laws of the land where never really laid out, and so the battle always felt a little arbitrary to me.  Understanding what all the pieces on the board can do is one of those things that's important in a story like this.  Knowing how the bad guys can be beaten, for example is part of what allows the reader to follow along.  In Lord of the Rings we know that Frodo has to get the ring into Mount Doom, and that's established early and repeated often.

In Blackest Night #8 new abilities and powers arrive fast and furious, most of the action is taken from the hands of the story's heroes (Hal and the other Lanterns) and put into the hands of fate or magic or whatever power is directing events.  Imagine if the Lord of the Rings had ended not with Frodo and Sam struggling up the hill but instead a magical spell carrying the ring to its destination while they stood around wondering what was going on. 

Having said that the conclusion of the fight comes early enough, and there are enough great moments of returning heroes and loose ends being tied up that it's worth the read.  Like the Sinestro Corps War the event has proven to be one of DC's strongest of recent years thanks both to Geoff Johns and to focusing on a very interesting point of the DCU.
