This is why we collect comics.

we muddle through the countless cross-overs, the endless events that numb our minds. We tread over the waste of newsprint at our feet and four-colored faces that stare back with the same grimace. Step after step. Page after page. But we don’t give up because just over that hill will be a lilly covered valley and a flowing river of life we’ve been looking for. Our salvation lies ahead.

Too heavy a praise for a comic book? I don’t think so. The art alone is, every panel of it, frameable. J.H Williams III refuses to be tied down to traditional comic book boarders, he pushes our perceptions of they way things should be right the edge. And right before we slip off he pulls us back – with a smile. It’s an exhilarating way to read a comic.

But without a story pretty art is just pretty art. Thankfully the story of Batwoman #1 is suburb and only enchances Williams’ gorgeous pages. There is something special going on here and I’ll be damned if I miss a month of it.

This is why I collect comics.

Pick of the Week my friends
