I dropped off Batwoman after the initial arc, planning on catching up in trade. I liked having a Bat-Title that was independent of the bigger events and universe. This 0 issue is a revelation and clearly shows why this title is unique. We’ve seen this origin story before but the motions here feel so raw, like an exposed nerve. We see Kate’s descent and subsequent rise to greatness. She’s flawed, like all the characters in the series and that makes them great. This was the best 0 issue I’ve read so far. The art was also great and even though it was a departure from previous issues, it totally served the tone. My only complaint is that we’re going back to Gotham City with Kate Kane again. This issue gave us a glimpse of her training and around the world exploits. Those kinds of adventures with a character like Kate Kane would make for a great Bat book.

  1. If you wanted a Bat book that is independent of the other Bat books I think you chose the right one. Batwoman was the only Bat book not involved in the Court of Owls crossover and it looks like she also won’t be involved in the Joker ‘Death of the Family’ crossover either.
