Batman fans are sure to be talking, speculating, and perhaps
complaining about B&R 16, the final chapter in Grant Morrison's
ambitious run on the book. It's not perfect, but I found it to be an
exciting, witty conclusion to the story arc, despite a few flaws and concerns.
I'm not going to summarize the plot - you can read the book if you haven't already.
The Good: Morrison writes an awesome Joker. I loved his dialogue and the fact that he was helping, in his own odd way, to take down Hurt and his goons. Using the banana peel was genius.
-As another commenter mentioned, it was true comeuppance to have the Joker bury Hurt, just as Hurt buried Batman. I can only assume he'll be back some day, but there was never any mention of him being found, unlike Pyg.
-I knew Batman would know a way out of the cell, and it was so satisfying to see him surprise Hurt and put the hurt back on him.
-The fight scene with the 99 fiends was fantastic - the best I've seen since Damian's battle in the cemetery, which itself was awesome.
-The grand scale of this story and how it ties all the way back into so much earlier material really shows Morrison's skill as a writer. There were so many subtle details reinforced from The Black Glove, RIP, Final Crisis, etc. it was amazing to watch it unfold. Be it phrases, ideas, numerology - it's all there.
-Interesting juxtaposition of Hurt facing Barbatos in the past and Hurt facing Batman in the present.
-Damian is the most interesting character in years.
The Bad: The art in this issue varied wildly in quality. The book started off OK, with crisp lines and coloring. It wasn't amazing, but it would serve well in any high-profile comic. But the middle got weird. It looked like whoever did that section was trying to imitate a mix of Quietly and Frank Miller's Dark Knight, which didn't work for me. Puffy, soft edges do not belong here. This was not Frasier Irving's strongest work, either. It looked like Joker's head had been punched off - Irving does this sometimes which puts things way out of proportion. He draws a really goofy looking Dick Grayson - seriously, the build is wrong, he is sort of dorky, bad haircut... more Gilligan than hero. A lot of the human, unmaksed faces at the end of the book were not good either. -2 on art.
-I wish the how of Bruce Wayne's return had been answered before the result of his return was shown. Yeah, I know, stop complaining about schedule/continuity. For me, it lessened the impact and may even impact the meaning of the story.
-There are still unanswered questions that I thought might be answered in this issue. Maybe they will be addressed later, like the RIP fill-in issues did (which I appreciated). Still, comic readers are eager to fill in the blanks to try and explain what happened (i.e. we're nerds), so I'm sure Morrison left some of it for us to speculate on or reveal later.
-My last complaint is one shared by others on the boards here, and this is why I knocked one off for story. I do not like Bruce's revelation that he has been funding Batman's efforts all these years. As great as the book was up until this point, this could ruin it for some. It is just too unrealistic (I know, in a world with superheores, but hear me out). This would open him up to a host of legal problems - he could be accused of funding vigilantism, or worse, terror; he could be arrested; he could be pursued and surveiled by Homeland Security, the GCPD, etc.; he could be charged, with Alfred, Dick, etc. under RICO; he could have his assets frozen; he could face lawsuits from Batman's "victims" and their families (criminals actually sue a lot for injuries sustain during the commission of their crimes!); and so on. Maybe those issues will be addressed and dealt with; if they are not, then this jumps the shark.
I am also uneasy about the concept of a league of Batmen across the world. I realize a loose federation of some characters exists, but establishing a global, funded and publicly-known network of operatives seems ridiculous. If it were kept secret, then maybe, but announcing it to the world? He's really opening himself up to legal problems. How many laws does that violate in the other countries? Can this be considered a network of terrorists? Can it get out of control or misused - look at what happened with Brother Eye, or the contingency plans he had to take out rogue JLA members that Ra's al Ghul stole, etc. It's a daring idea, I just don't know if it will work. I'll give it a try, but it better make sense.
I have other speculations, but I've gone on long enough here. The story had me up and was a satisfying conclusion to this epic, up until the press conference. The art was a mixed bag - some was amazing, some was not so amazing. Congrats to Morrison and company for a wild ride.
