Confession time:

It’s time to let people know the real me. I am not a nerd. Truth be told, I’m just a relatively educated burnout with nerdy interests. It would be nigh impossible for me to actually claim authentic nerdidty since I had numerous girlfriends throughout school, was invited to the best parties and won’t be marrying the first girl I have sex with..

I know what you’re saying, “what the hell does this have to do with Batman, FACE?”

I’m getting there.

You see, as I mentioned, I have used a number of drugs. Most any drug you can think of I’ve tried at least once (with the exception of steroids). I’ve seen and participated in things that would make most of you run home and hide behind a stack of longboxes. So when it comes to unconventional story method I’m generally the first in line. Firing up a spliff and trying my mind with complexities is what I live for.

and therein lies the problem..

I wanted so badly to get on board with Batman when I jumped on during the pre-RIP multi-Batman storyline. Surely, I thought, I’ll get this when the RIP story-arc wraps up, but like most new readers of the Bat series I was left scratching my head when it completed.

Frustration mounted, cries were raised, and the Batman forum turned into a scene from West Side Story with the Understandees squaring off against the Perpetually lost. Many egos were lifted while others were tore down and the crucial aspect of comprehension was lost in the ensuing chaos..

It’s clear that in order to grasp Morrison’s story the reader will need to read his complete run (with maybe the exception of the Ra’s storyline?). I respect that. I just hoped it wouldn’t be the case in, perhaps, Batman’s most successful year.

and so the plight of the new Bat-reader is made:

I vow to read Morrison’s run on Batman and squeeze my head around this story before “he builds a new box around me”. I admire what he wants to achieve here and won’t miss out on a great story. But I will not change my mind that this is a debacle on DC’s part, having presented RIP as its own entity, because RIP ‘is’ part of a larger story and that should be made more clear.

Fortunately, Batman #682 provides a twist in the path. We have been removed to Bruce’s current whereabouts as of Final Crisis. What a pleasant suprise to see continuity shared between major titles! And while there wasn’t much stray from the complex storytelling found in RIP, at least we were informed that what’s taking place here is actually not taking place – I can certainly put that in my pipe and smoke it.

A final note:

By no means do I intend to glorify drug usage here. It was essentially a means of setting up new perspective I hoped might open up further discussion among the IFanboy community. I’d also mention that I’m currently clean, though, it is the weekend and I sense cervezas on the horizon.

Respect your peers people!

  1. Interesting review. Though I was confused at the bookended contrast. You stereotype geeks iin a derogatory manner then urge the reader to respect his peers. Perhaps I misunderstood?

  2. No, I think you’re right. An argument could be made, though, that since I’ve dissassociated myself from the nerd peer group that I’m not necessarily disrespecting ‘my’ peers, but great observation nonetheless. 🙂

  3. Wow.  I’ve written and deleted three responses.

    Just… wow.

  4. Huh?

  5. @conor – that’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me. I think? 😉

  6. I’m a nerd who has experimented with drugs, enjoys complex literature, and has actually had sex with a girl. I don’t think it’s all that uncommon.

    Just putting it out there.

  7. @ Face: Maybe he was saying it to me…

  8. @JJ – yeah, i’m sure he was more impressed by your observation than a formative review which could offer up an honest, level-headed approach to the RIP controversy. snarkiness trumps sincerity everyday in the land of forums. btw: where the hell’s your comment for my SI review? i wrote half the damn thing just for you and i’m about the only one you didn’t leave a comment for.

@BB – congratulations! send me your address and i’ll mail you a bone.

  9. I’m confused.

  10. I think I pissed you off. Sorry if I did man.

  11. @JumpinJup – no, you’re alright. i’ve rather enjoyed your comments recently. spec. the "me so tardid" one. very funny. if anything i thought we were having a ‘snap’ war. you called me out rightly so and in retaliation i aimed for laughs but may have missed. the SI remark has to do with a comment you left me on issue #7. i tried to right the ship with my review for #8 and made reference to your remarks. go read it and maybe you’ll remember.

  12. Yes, this issue is good to spark up to.

  13. You know something that is weird.  I woke up having a flashback at 4:00am the other morning the day after reading this issue.  I haven’t used any drugs other than Methadone (and occasional Miller Lite) in several years.  You think Grant Morrison’s run on Batman somehow counteracted with my daily Methadone dosage and put me in a trip like state for nearly an hour?!  I doubt it was the hot chicken wings and the Lipton sweetened iced tea I ingested before I went to bed the other night…

  14. @FACE: Ah, pardon my ‘tardidness. I’ll go check out your reviews now.

  15. Dude. I think you have me crossed with another dude.

  16. For the record — I’ve read all of Morrison’s Batman run & there is still HUGE chunks of RIP that make zero sense to me. Don’t expect reading the whole run will automatically makes things clear, because I honestly think that’s it’s not meant to be. Or else how could SO MANY different people with decent comprehension skills have totally ideas of what they read?
