Kinda surprised this was not the pick of the week. Like many of you, I am a sucker for Kevin Maguire art (what was that comic from the mid 90’s with the guy with the Doctor Who/Harry Potter scarf power? that I bought in both runs?).

So, what’s this about? Simple and easy. Barbara Gordon Batgirl and Catwoman’s first meeting (or so its states on the cover).

You may be asking yourself, “Why does bean6344 (you can call me Bean) think this would have been POTW. That’s a good question, but I wish you would not question my opinion yet. You may want to wait until my review is done! Anyway…back on track. I thought this would have been POTW because it feature muched love Batman Family characters and this is Conor’s week. Also, it features the artwork of Mr. Maguire who I believe is noteworthy whenever we get treated to it (especially outside of the JLA “BWAHAHA” universe). Lastly, while the Cap Brit and the MI:13 was good, it was not, IMHO, any better than the Pete Wisdom mini/trade.

Back to the review. I will try and do this spoilerless, so here it goes. Babs (Batgirl) is reviewing a document of some importance and confidentiality that up and disappears. She immediately ditches her “Librarian persona” and puts on her batgear to hunt down the culprit. The chase leads her to Catwoman who has no idea who Batgirl is and (wait for it…) the readers are treated to page after page of sexy catfight. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. To all of the fangirls and more enlightened fanboys out there, I ma taking a few seconds from this review to slap my hand. Anyway… the fight leads to a clothing optional (and the only option is you do without clothes) club. The young Batgirl is forced into the dilemma of deciding to turn away from the case or to bear all and continue? What does she decide? Well… that would be spoiling. Check it out for yourself. This really is a great issue.

Highlights? The art was stellar. I am usually hot or cold for the (so far) unmentioned Fabian Nicieza, but he did a good job of portraying a young hero with doubts about how she should handle a situation vs.,]. how the boss (Batman) would handle it. I especially enjoyed when Selina realized that she (Batgirl) might be the real thing because she has a fully functional utility belt and not a” toy replica”.

This is exactly what this series should be. Great creators doing great stories. So, run out and pick yourself up a copy or at least let your comic shop know to reserve the inevitable TPB for you.

Bean out!

P.S. I would pick something higher than 5 for art if I could but then again, I’m the kinda guy that tells my employees to give 105% even though it is impossible.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. You reviewed the wrong book buddy.

  2. Hey, this review made no sense! And neither did this book.

  3. Hey, Nate’s a jerk.

  4. I actually like the idea of maybe writing misleading reviews just to confuse the "It doesn’t make any sense!"-crowd even more.

  5. I know it’s been a few months since I read this one, but I don’t remember Batgirl being in here at all.  You sure you’re not reading Batman Condidential?  I think they had a Catwoman meets Batgirl story not too long ago.
