I’ve always thought of Grant Morrison’s work to be fascinating, deep, witty, and utterly confusing. Although this book was certainly confusing, at least for a first time reader, it’s definitely a glimpse of what is sure to be an epic plotline for Batman.

This first issue is an attempt to recap everything that has led up to this current arc while introducing new key players. Although the recap does not go into great detail, it does allow the reader to progress and keep up somewhat to what’s happening with Batman.

My favorite aspect of this issue is the art. Tony Daniel has done an absolutely stunning job, producing jaw dropping spreads, car chases, and a solid jam-packed layout. I finished this issue somewhat confused, but it is a good sense of confusion, one that makes me genuinely intrigued and anxious to see how far down the rabbit hole Morrison has brought the world of Gotham.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Dude, I’ve read almost every bat-book for 20 years, and this book confused me too. I think it’s Grant Morrison’s style — to leave you confused & wanting to figure things out, like a mystery … which can be kinda annoying, if ya ask me.

Beautiful art in this issue though. Hopefully the story makes more sense as it progresses.

    Nice review, mate!

  2. that is his style, but you just have to believe in him, and trust that in the end, itll all come together. im as a big an x-men fan as youll ever meet, but i had a similar reaction during his run on that book. the end was great though, and it all made sense. im sure well get the same here.
