I’ve made some crazy vows on this website. Never reading a Bendis book again, never reading a Mark Millar book again, and the saddest one of all is not reading Amazing Spider-Man. Not forever, but I was always wanting to like this new run on the character. But it was so boring to me I just couldn’t read this series again. However, I have always wanted to give this series another chance. This seems like a perfect start to say the least. I mean it only has one thing going for it:

JOE KELLY AND DEADPOOL TOGETHER AGAIN! AWWWW YEAH!

Sorry about that outburst, I’m just so happy to see Joe Kelly back on the character that signified my love of reading comic books. After Deadpool #900, I could not wait to see where Kelly takes us with this random team up. Let me tell you all: This issue does not disappoint.

It’s like Joe Kelly has never left the character in the first place. Everything about this issue felt like reading the old, 90’s Deadpool series all over again. The plot is simple to say the least. Deadpool is hired to stall Spider-Man for a couple of hours and it ends up being a wild ride in New York City. Everything that comes out of Deadpool’s mouth was funny and entertaining to read. What I love about Kelly’s take on the character is that he’s just insane. Daniel Way has shown the level of insanity with Wilson’s character lately, but Kelly really knows how to write insanity. Deadpool is arguing with himself (no double narration here though, maybe Kelly doesn’t like that idea), making pop culture references, and as a whole just creeping Spidey out. There’s so many great moments in this that I would feel awful to spoil them for you. Let’s just say that this has the most dramatic ‘Yo Momma’ joke in history. There’s also a good amount of jokes with Spider-Man himself, especially with the fight with Lady Stilt-Man. Overall though this is about Deadpool and Joe Kelly has made my week.

What almost kills the fun of this entire issue is the art. My god, this has some of the worst artwork I’ve seen in a comic in awhile. Maybe it’s just his style, but everything is so off model is was hurting my head. Spider-Man changes head shape almost every single panel. Sames goes for Deadpool and some other characters involved with the issue. He can’t even make women sexy on purpose, so there is no redeeming qualities about this art. The backgrounds are kind nice, but it gets all muddled with the action covering the entire panel. In the end, the constant banter with Deadpool made me ignore how bad the art is for the time. This was still thought one of the more uglier comics to come out this year.

Again, Joe Kelly has really made my week. He came back to a great that made me love comics in the first place. It was glorious and a lot of fun to read. In regards on trying Amazing Spider-Man on a weekly basis again…..Probably not gonna happen. There’s a couple of times where the Deadpool stuff is put away for something big happening in Parker’s life. I could care less about what those pages were saying. I have a feeling that if I continue with this series past this issue, I am going to be disappointed. At least this issue made me love Joe Kelly all over again.

Story: 5 - Excellent

  1. I don’t think it is that the art is bad, I think it is just the style.  Or maybe not.  Either way I’m with you in that I did not like the art in this book very much at all.  I did enjoy the story quite a bit though but it really seemd more targeted at Deadpool fans than Spidey fans.  I am the opposite of you in that I found the background story with Kraven’s family and Madam Web more interesting than the Spidey/Deadpool story, though it was a lot of fun.  Too bad you don’t like ASM though, its one of my favorite books.

  2. I think I said "though" too many times.

  3. It’s okay dude, I repeat a lot of the same words over and over again.

I can tell from your avatar that you loved this issue. lol

  4. As far as the art, I’d give it a 2 or 3, because I felt like Deadpool and Spider-man looked pretty great, but all people faces looked pretty terrible. Wouldn’t it have been great if Scottie Young had drawn the interior art as well as the cover art?  I love Scottie Young, but this is the first time he’s drawn a cover to a book I buy, so that was a nice surprise for me this week.

  5. The art isn’t bad. Think harder

  6. You gave the art a 1? Do you not have eyes?

  7. I agree with you on the art, TNC, though I didn’t really enjoy the writing.  I feel that, apart from his recent work on Deadpool 900, and this, he’s grown tremendously as a writer since the Deadpool days.  And while I don’t disparge his 90s writing on Deadpool, I really wish his current Deadpool writing was up on par with his 2009 Sipder Man runs.

This title left me realizing just how much more I enjoy Daniel Way’s Deadpool than anyone else’s.
