X-MEN SECOND COMING #1

MANY WILL BE WOUNDED. SEVERAL WILL DIE. The climax of four years of X-Men stories is the X-Event of 2010! What started in HOUSE OF M with the Decimation of mutantkind and erupted with the first new mutant birth in MESSIAH COMPLEX finishes here. In the epic crossover SECOND COMING, Cyclops’ faith pays off when Cable returns to the present with Hope, the girl he believes to be the mutant messiah. But will she be the savior or destroyer of mutantkind? We may never know, as she is the target of an initiative for mutant eradication unlike anything they X-Men have ever experienced. Many will be wounded. Several will die. Is Hope worth it?

  1. I’m somewhat excited for this crossover, but not looking forward to picking up books that aren’t already on my pull list. Still, I’ll give it a shot.

  2. I can’t imagine this stays interesting for 14 issues when Messiah War couldn’t stay interesting for 7.

  3. Very excited for this book.  Cant wait to see the payoff for what started back in Messiah Complex

  4. No, I’m not falling for it. I’ll rely on Ron’s recaps on the Podcast. Still waiting for a Ron Vs X-Men podcast so I don’t have to read the X comics anymore.  ;o)

  5. I’m not totally sold on this yet.  We’ll see…

  6. the only bad thing about this crossover will be having to pick between Granov and Finch covers… at least we get Finch pencils on this.

  7. Aside from that terrible Necrosha story, Kyle and Yost are awesome X-Men writers, so I’m looking foreward to this

  8. For some reason I thought Fraction was writing this. Too bad.

  9. Will pick this up w/o prior X-Men exposure. Neh, what do I know?

  10. @glwarm76- this is a true crossover that will go through Uncanny, New Mutants, Legacy, and X-Force, so all those respective writers will have hands in this.

  11. Booo Adi Granov cover 🙁

  12. @Slockhart: Yeah, it looks like really cheap sci fi.

  13. I am just taking a chance that this may turn out to be something great.

  14. Had it been Fraction I would have been excited.  Now, not so much.  And 14 issues?  is that for the core story, or is that counting optional tie-ins?

  15. Really liked Messiah Complex. This is the continuation (conclusion?) to that story. Messiah War was a two title crossover that was not allowed to move the big story forward, so probably should not be used for comparison. Still there is no guarantee that this will actually be good. Most multi-issue crossovers are not. Adi Granov cover is a bad beginning… every one of his covers looks exactly the same to me. But I am still excited because this event should lead to some big changes to X-men status quo. And of course Bishop has finally stopped chasing Cable. Hell, I would buy two 14 issue minis to keep that storyline from coming back again.

  16. Am I the only one who likes that Adi Granov cover?

  17. @NathanNicdao- you say really cheap sci fi like that’s a bad thing

  18. Going to pass . . .
Only X-men title I read now is X-Factor, that is because it stays focused and seems self contained. All other X-men titles are all over the place. I don’t have the energy or interest anymore . . .

  19. @ABirdseysview: Sometime it is. Or maybe because i love the variant cover I cannot afford.

  20. hm, so the Finch covers are of the one-in-a-million-you-better-bring-your-plastic variety? if so, that’s a shame but at least then I don’t have to choose.  at any rate, I started reading regularly in late 2004 when Granov was on Iron Man and Finch was on New Avengers so I really love both.

  21. I really like where all the X-titles are at right now so I’m looking forward to this crossover.  I just hope it goes smooth. And I LIVE for cheap Sci-Fi.

  22. I love this cover.  Very "episode 4-6 poster" ish.

  23. It’s been so long since i’ve read X-books, and i’m coming back to give this crossover a try so that may be coloring my opinion, but I loved this!  I haven’t really seen these characters in a while though, but still.  Lots of fun.

  24. This is a great start to the crossover. Hopefully, this will be a very satisfying and epic story, as after reading this issue, it looks to be the culmination of pretty much everything, including Cable and X-Force. I’m very eagar to continue reading this.

  25. Perfectly written and Finch as done an awesome job. Very happy with this first chapter and I really hope that Fraction and Dodson can keep up.

  26. I don’t know. I really didn’t think this was all that great. See the X-Men posture for 3/4 of the book! See Cable & Hope…. run from insane men who are trying to kill them. Oh, look it’s symmetrical pacing as not one, but two evil organizations try to kill Hope before the X-Men get there, just like in Messiah Complex! Having read this, and missing out on all but Uncanny and X-Factor, I feel as if nothing has changed in for the X-Men in the two years since Complex ended. Just boring. However, Finch’s art was great (though there were some panels where Scott is shown from the underside and he has Leno chin!) 3/5 for me. I’m willing to follow this storyline, but… it really needs to break out of retreading the past and move this story forward.

  27. @Prax: Unfortunatly, X-Force has been all about retreading the past. Luckily, though, it all seems to be coming to a head here.

  28. @Prax I don’t mind the inclusion of aspects from the past (Bit hypocritical to praise GL for that and bash this one) but it’s just been the same thing for two years with nothing happening until Uncanny 522! (Like how Cable was essentially the same thing issue after isssue) I was expecting this event to bring us to a point where that was different with the first issue, so far… nothing is new.

  29. Not bad but I think I may wait for the hardcover.  Finch did a great job on the art.

  30. @Prax- I get what you’re saying, but I think its stll a good start toward something new and I’m sure by the end of Second Coming we’ll have it. At least I Hope so.

  31. I agree with @Prax. It was good, but feels just like Messiah Complex. I hope it changes drastically, otherwise I don’t think I’ll stick around for the whole even. And yeah, a shit ton of posing by the characters in this book.

  32. I really enjoyed this. I might even buy the whole crossover.

Great to see Finch doing interiors, too. I love the hell out of his art.

  33. I have to agree with prax. I haven’t read anything since Messiah Complex and didnt miss a beat in this issue… The only difference was a few new faces… That makes me believe that the story telling in the two years in between didnt matter to the story

  34. I thought the smiley face armor was connected to Nanny & the OrphanMaker.  Am I making that up?  Anyone know what I’m talking about?

  35. This is why I read Xmen titles.  Years of stories coming together, hints at subplots, continuity dense.  I love where all of the x-books are at currently (gonna miss warpath on x-force). I thought this was a great intro into the crossover.  The next three months are gonna be fun.

And David Finch’s art didnt hurt.

  36. @Zattaric I thought so, too. I can’t place it for sure. I need to go pull out my issues of 80s X-Factor and Uncanny now.

  37. I’m sorry but that was fucking phenominal.  Kyle and Yost have really built an all-timer here.  I really hope the rest of the writers can keep up.

  38. @Zattaric – That’s "The Right".  They were from the Simonson X-Factor days – anti-mutant soldiers put together by Cameron Hodge.  They also appeared at some point during the current X-Force.

  39. Bah! You guys . . . made me change my mind. Since it was a light week for me – I picked this up.
Worth it for Finch’s art alone. Not sure I understand the entire story yet – but this does seem like a good jumping on issue.

  40. I was not excited for this X-event at all, but after this issue, its hard for me not to be.  Very good issue and start to this event.

  41. I love David Finch art every once in a while, and this is one of those times.

  42. This was fantastic. 5 stars all the way. This was everything I love about X-Men comics.

  43. just because this is picking up threads from stories from a couple years ago doesn’t mean the stories that have been told in between have been worthless.  they’re just different stories.

  44. I started reading comics again a year ago after a 15 year layoff. The most disappointing thing I came across was the state of the X-books. I grew up on the Lee, Silvestri, Claremont X books and what I saw wasn’t cutting it.The cast of characters seemed weak, the stories dull and the art not so good. I gave Utopia a try and even Silvestri’s art on the first issue couldn’t save it. But THIS. THIS is what the X-Mean should be. Had me feeling all nostalgic. Seeing the "Alpha" team brought a smile to my face. Tthe story was great and Finch’s art was perfect for the book. I only wish he was doing more issues. I think I will be on board for the whole crossover. Hoping to not be disappointed.

  45. @Abirdseysview That is decidedly not my point.

  46. Put simply this story is how the X-Men should be. Kyle & Yost can do little wrong in my eyes. Their X-Men work has always been strong.

Now I just wait for Fraction’s Uncanny issue next week to ruin it all again… 🙁

  47. @Prax- right, but with the Sisterhood arc, Psylocke returning, moving to Nation X, the New Mutants reforming and functioning as a team, Magneto coming back, I don’t think it’s fair to say nothing has happened in this time.  just the fact that Cable and Hope come back to the Mansion, expecting to find the X-Men there highlights that things have changed since the two of them left.

  48. I’m totally with ABirdseysView. And don’t forget the X-Force killing business, Messiah War, Bastion, X-23, Hope growing up, Necrosha, all the villains plots merging together…

@theswordisdrawn- If the Uncanny #523 preview is any indication, I think its going to be cool.

  49. Does anyone know if this was the only Finch penciled issue in the crossover? Who else is doin duty?

@rockingeek Dont forget Illyana comin back from limbo or Danger AND Dr. Nemesis joining the team.  Doug Ramsey is ALIVE for shits sake! It a great time to be an X reader.

  50. How cool is it that Illyana is with the Alpha team in this issue?  I’m so pumped that she’s back.  Anyone who hasn’t read X-Infernus, go pick it up

  51. The two page splash where the whole team appears and smash up the vans… that was the X-men to me. And Kyle and Yost hit the little notes as well, with Nightcrawler talking faith with Cyclops and Colossus shushing his sister when she starts leaning a bit too much into her demonic side. Loved it.

A lot has happened in the last two years, but mostly it has been all over the place, especially in Uncanny and Legacy. The one title that has retained focus was X-force. Scott has been compromising more and more out of depseration to keep the mutant race going and now it is finally going to blow back on him. But yes, this story starts just where Complex ended, only Hope is now grown up. Since I really liked Messiah Complex and have not enjoyed much of what has come in between, I would actually describe that as a good thing.

I am now pumped for this story, although the need to have a death to make it important strikes a lame cord to me. In the wake of Necrosha and Blackest Night could we put a temporary moratorium on killing off characters just to make your story more important? There are lots of other horrible things you can do to a character besides killin them. Most of those are more interesting at this point.

  52. I’m psyched! Looks like something good is finally on the horizon for the xmen.
