I try not to throw around 5s all willy-nilly; a book's gotta earn 'em, but this one did for me.
As a dedicated X-Fan, I slogged disappointedly through the Necrosha crossover and even followed Cable's title through the rambling tangent it's been on lately. I'm thus tempted to dismiss my enjoyment of this issue as the result of lowered expectations, but I really think it's more than that.
First, Finch's artwork really works for me here. He feels like an X-Man penciler, evoking the work of Marc Silvestri and Jim Lee from decades past that helped define for me what the X-Men should look like.
Second, the script is solid and this story paints the X-Men is exactly the colors that have always endeared them to me. They're a superhero family in every sense of the word: tied together by blood and more, but oh-so vulnerable to jealousy, temptation, and unfair expectations. Cable and Hope's return home amidst the larger group's experiences on Utopia and the even-larger goings-on in the MU set the perfect stage for each of the characters in this book to shine. I particularly enjoyed Scott and Kurt's "man of faith" dialogue, Kurt's confrontation of Logan, and the team's suprise attack on the Sapien League (particularly the awesome spread of their first strike).
I'm as weary as the next guy of these month-after-month crossover arcs, but this issue got me excited for Second Coming.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

I agree about Finch’s pencils and Elred’s colors 100%. This is what the X-Men SHOULD look like.
Finch’s art was the highlight for me. The story was good as well but the jury is still out on that until we get more issues.
