  1. I’m really looking forward to this one, although it is aparently going to be Golden Age dimensions. I have no Golden Age sized bags or boards, and I don’t want to buy 100 of them just to store this book. What to do?

  2. your local shop should be willing to sell you a single set.  at least i’m hoping mine will.

  3. Why is there so much hype behind this book?

  4. Cautiously optimistic.  Hoping the pre-hype machine doesn’t bite off more than it can chew.

  5. Yeah why is there so much hype behind this? If the ECCC podcast is to be believed then there’s enough copies of this like it’s Jim Lee’s X-Men #1 !!

But it is a slow week for me, might give it a try.

  6. hype aside, i just think it looks rad, i like vikings.

  7. Oversized, nice!

  8. I think it’s the combination of crime, vikings, and the fact that it’s supposed to be written for issues rather than trade. Whether it delivers or not, well, that’s what Wednesdays are for.

  9. This looks intriguing…

  10. Ivan Brandon did a hell of a job on his Kobra: Faces of Evil one shot. I’m excited about this not because of the hype, but because I think Brandon might just be really great. I can’t wait for FC: Escape.

  11. Oversized for 3$?! I’m in!

  12. I’m in.

  13. If my shop has this, I’ll probably get the first issue to try it.  I think hype is driving this one.  I wasn’t impressed with the 5 page preview at all.  The fact that it’s over-sized is another strike against the book for me.  I don’t really need one book that won’t fit into my Image box.

  14. I wasn’t sure I was going to be that into this book, even after hearing Ivan Brandon hype it on the video show last week, but I’ll give it a shot. I’m really hoping that it pulls off a Scalped vibe – another book i need to start supporting via floppy instead of trade-waiting.

  15. the wordballoon interview convinced me to give this ago.

  16. I will give it one issue. Big Northlanders Fan.

  17. I’ll check it out, looks interesting.

  18. I’m not going to lie, the viking mohawk is bad ass.

  19. I hope I like this more than I liked Northlanders. The crime angle makes it sound more appealing to me.

  20. I just listened to Siuntres’ interview with Brandon. I’m totally buying this!

  21. @JJ-Yeah, that’s what sold me on it.  I ignored the hype, and even most of what Image showed at their Wondercon panel.  Yet hearing Brandon’s enthusiasm, choic of format, etc. made me want to give this a real chance.

  22. I’m kinda hoping that DC puts brandon on a ongoing soon. They could use someone like him.

  23. This looks like fun, I’m definitely in for an issue at least

  24. @mulletpeep I agree. Marvel is way ahead of DC in aquiring new talent. Ivan Brandon is one of the few people that seems like they can be for DC what Matt Fraction is to marvel. A relative new comer who has the chops to take on importnat books. I thin DC can also be more like Marvel in promoting there new talent. Put someone really good on a fairly important book and say in the solicits that the writer is a "rising star" regardless of their actual popularity.

  25. I really like that cover and hope the art looks as sharp on the inside.  I had no idea the format would be different, but I’m really excited for it because I love when people play with the formatting.

  26. If this was 3.99 I wouldn’t pick it up, but seeing as how Image is trying to help me out, I’ll pick it up.

  27. Dude my store opened a half hour ago, already sold out? wtf…the preview wasn’t event that great.  reprint comes out may 6th hope its worth the wait

  28. Not to add to the hype machine but my LCS sold out.  I took lunch early to beat the noon crowd and managed to grab the last copy.  I also grabbed the last copy of Ignition City. My LCS already had free golden age boards and bags ready for the Viking books.    I’ll read Viking during my bus commute home.  Hopefully this book lives up to the hype.

  29. rub it in WetWork!

  30. I’m not into the Viking concept or the story from what I saw but seeing this in printed form on the comic book shelves… WOW!  It’s beautiful.  Was very tempted.

  31. the hype must not have reached my LCS, which still had plenty of copies even at 4pm.  And they were already bagged and boarded.  Sweet!

Not sure if I like it yet.  I’m going to read it again, but story aside, it is one of the most beautiful looking books I’ve seen in forever!  Fantastic!

  32. Wow, some of you rated this surprisingly low. I thought this was a good opener!

  33. I found the dialog a little confusing. It was difficult in the beginning to figure out who Hrolf was. The beggining was a little confusing in general. And later on the dialog just wasn’t working for me. I’m not sure how to explain it. It’s like how Morrison’s stuff can feel sometimes, where the words seem like they are floating free of character, context and story. It made it very difficult to connect with this.

  34. Agreed, I enjoyed the art but the writing fell way short.  Not sure I can even give it one more issue.

  35. It was confusing in the beginning, but the art shows what happened. And by the end I understood it all. Awesome book and great value for $3.

  36. It was definitely a little confusing.  The art was good.  To compare, I liked the first issue of Northlanders that I read much more than Viking.  The language is clearer and the word phrasing makes more sense while reading.  This was pretty tough to read.  It might make more sense if you read it out loud to yourself with a Viking accent….??  The last 2 pages were pretty cool though.  This book just may not be for me because I prefer comics that I can just blow through and enjoy rather than ones that I have to read twice to understand the sentences.

  37. Our store got shorted, so I’ll have to wait until the second printing, I suppose. Oh well.

  38. My store had a ton of copies. (Thank you Comic Relief in Berkeley, California!)

Yeah, I had to reread the beginning like 3 times before I really got into the dialogue and got into the right mindset.  After that, it was awesome.  Great art, interesting story, I like where this is going.  Solid issue.  Maybe over-hyped, but I enjoyed it quite a bit nonetheless.

  39. I got to my shop at 30 minutes after it had opened and they only had one left! I thought the beginning was a little confusing, but overall I thought it was the best thing I’d read this week.

  40. My usual shop was sold out, so I had to hit up another one of the shops in town; I got one of the last 5 copies. I really enjoyed it, honestly, though it was definitely over-hyped.  Still loved it.

  41. Anything that is hyped is overhyped IMO.

  42. The dress is very thoughtful too. Nice to see someone not do the same ol’ thing.

  43. I thought this was fantastic.  It was tough to follow the story in old tyme speak, but once I got used to it, the book really took off.  The art is just mesmorizing.

  44. I loved the oversizedness. I was lucky I got the last one on the shelf. It had a awesome sense of design cover to cover. If Thor wasn’t so awesome, this would be the pick.

  45. Wow this was really a great comic.  The larger size really suits this are which is really gorgeous.  Would have probably been the pick for me had it not been for the combination of Neil Gaiman and Batman.

  46. I think the book was unnecessarily confusing.  You often couldn’t tell who was who, and it wasn’t a stylistic Morrison confusion, it was a poor comic-crafting c onfusion.

Example: Last panel on Page 3 – That sure looks like Hrolf saying "Hrolf?"

Example: Page 2 panel 4, you see what looks Hrolf’s arm with a thick wristband…panel 5 you see a similar looking hand punching Knut…but that isn’t the same character?!  WTF.

Separately story and art aren’t bad…but the combination was awful.

Too bad, the paper stock and book size were cool….dropped.

  47. I agree with the "unnecessarily confusing", poor comic crafting and example 1.  I’m probably going to check out the 2nd issue to see if the writing and dialogue get any cleaner and tighter.  If not, yeah, the size gimmick and the art is cool, but the writing HAS to be good for me.

  48. I’m in agreement with Urthona.  While I don’t mind rereading books with a deep story and a level of complexity that requires my undivided attention, the art and writing still needs to communicate in a harmonious manner.  It should not become a chore to have to reread pages due to unnecessary confusion caused by weak collaboration.

  49. You’re absolutely right. There were a few confusing panels. But really, what’s a panel or two among many?

I liked it despite the few snags.

  50. Yeah i wasn’t super hyped about this, but it did look interesting. After reading it i am less than satisfied. I was confused alot of the issue…BUT, damn it was a good cliff-hanger

  51. I wasn’t too into it, the art was great, the writing was alright, but I just don’t think it was my thing. If someone convinces me that the next few issues are superb, I may check out the trade, but until then I’m going to have to drop.
