  1. So… any difference between this and the FCBD version?

  2. apparently it has a bonus "back-up" story along with the letter pages

  3. Thats what I was wondering. I’ve liked Savage Dragon since I started a few issues back, but the FCBD ish wasn’t very good (IMHO) because of all the exposition of who/what Savage Dragon is. And if this is the same issue, why would I pay for it when I got it for free 2 weeks ago? Hopefully, Image/Larsen realizes that.

  4. I was able to get my grubby little hands on the FCBD issue so I am looking forward to reading this soon.

  5. Eh, I’ll probably pick up this issue but I don’t get why they’d release this for full price after the FCBD issue and all.

  6. I read the FCBD version of this….which I imagine is what this will be but with some extras. Not worth it in my book. Especially at that price

  7. @Slockhart: This one costs 3.50

  8. I’m glad this isn’t on my standing order (even though it’s supposed to be) because I’d be mighty pissed if I had to buy this since I already got the FCBD one.

  9. It seems like every issue of Savage Dragon is a jumping on point.

You know….this is basically the FCBD issue with a few bells and whistles. Probably gonna review this cause I got some things to say about this series

  10. They put it out as a pay version because not every store, especially overseas, where I am, participate in FCBD. So I am glad they do. If you got the FCBD versions, it’s probably not necessary to buy this one as well.

  11. TheNextChampion: "It seems like every issue of Savage Dragon is a jumping on point."

Hahaha! Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Could that be taken as either a pro or a con? I mean, if a book is consistently that accessible, could it be that it is made so to its advantage and that it’s actually very good in spite of this? Are all the current issues of DRAGON done-in-ones? Then again, does an issue have to be a done-in-one story to be accessible?

I’ve actually not read too much SAVAGE DRAGON in the past, but what I have read I’ve enjoyed; right now I’m just kinda wondering where a good place to actually jump on WOULD be based on what the latest trade collection is set to cover.

  12. Well for an advance take on this issue: If this is considered a jumping on point then Larsan must be looney.

  13. I had to buy this since the LCS put it in my box even though I got the FCBD version.  When I read the FCBD version, I thought it was ok.  I’m dropping the title since I’m pissed I had to pay for this after getting the free copy.  Story hasn’t really captured me anyway (I started with 145) so that was pretty much the last straw.

Do another Future Shock or something next year instead of this.

  14. There’s been a bit of a semi-argument over my review.

Let me just clarify that I did think this was terrible. As a ‘jumping on point’ it doesnt help this issue is the end of a story line. I didnt pay for this, but if I did; I’d probably be more miffed then I was typing this review. If it’s a jumping on point; make it like a #0 issue or something. Dont make your FCBD issue an end of a storyline and try and shove in the entire history of Dragon in 3-4 pages.

If people love this series, more power to them. They got more enjoyment out of this comic then me. But in my view this is a bad callback to early (crappy) Image comics. Just my feelings and hopefully everyone gets back to normal on issue #149….cause I wont be hear to destroy it like I did this issue 🙂

  15. I think I didn’t get it exactly. What you thought about the issue?  Did you like it or not?

  16. I just thought I’d add my final comments here. I agree with TNC in that this probably wasn’t the best issue to use for FCBD. #145 would have been perfect, as it tells you everything you need to know much more eloquently and fluidly, wheras it felt a bit forced here. That said, I loved this issue. I loved the obvious throwbacks to all the different eras of comics history (golden age Daredevil, Kirby influences, ’90s design, etc.) I wasn’t completely sold on it until the satisfying conclusion. There are so many things I love about this book. I can totally understand why some (or many) may not enjoy this, but it hits a lot of the right buttons for me. There’s nothing else like it in my pull bin.

@Bendrix: He hated it. You can read his review above. It’s a good review, and he defends his position very well.

  17. I was being sarcastic (and should have known it doesn’t work on the internet) because he wrote a review, posted several comments, the latest on this and this here comment section and not the review one, to make sure nobody misses it. Looks a lot like shit-stirring to me. Especially when it comes from the self-proclaimed "most controversial poster on iFanboy".

But i guess everybody needs a hobby,

  18. Oh, and before anybody thinks I want to stir shit: You’re right. He defends his post very well. And he got a point there and it could be viewed like that. I think #145 had been a better issue for FCBD. And Savage Dragon is a difficult book. Either you like it for it’s different approach, it’s remeniscences, it’s thoroughgoingness, or you don’t.

Just laying it on a bit thick in the comment section.

  19. You know, I felt the sarcasm, but I wasn’t sure. I hope there’s somebody out there working on how to make sarcasm work on the internet. And yea, I completely agree with you on all points.

  20. The reason there was a pay version at all is because a lot of stores which generally order Savage Dragon do not participate in Free Comic Book Day and that would mean that those stores and those fans wouldn’t be able to get Savage Dragon #148 at all. There are also folks who don’t want a book with a big white rectangle on it or who want the letters pages and backup story.

And yeah–it wasn’t your usual issue of Savage Dragon. It did start in the midst of things but you’d have to be a complete dunderhead not to be able to figure out what’s going on ("It says that Dragon’s kids were ‘kidnapped’–what does that mean? I’m so lost and confused.") and it was aimed at younger readers.  As a Free Comic Book Day book it needed to be aimed at kids–that’s the gig. An issue like #145 would be completely inappropriate in that regard (as would issues 146, 147 and 149). So–I did what I could with it.

If the mail is any indication–it worked okay. A lot of folks will stick around for the next couple at least. we’ll see how that works out.
