The reason there was a pay version at all is because a lot of stores which generally order Savage Dragon do not participate in Free Comic Book Day and that would mean that those stores and those fans wouldn't be able to get Savage Dragon #148 at all. There are also folks who don't want a book with a big white rectangle on it or who want the letters pages and backup story. 

And yeah--it wasn't your usual issue of Savage Dragon. It did start in the midst of things but you'd have to be a complete dunderhead not to be able to figure out what's going on ("It says that Dragon's kids were 'kidnapped'--what does that mean? I'm so lost and confused.") and it was aimed at younger readers.  As a Free Comic Book Day book it needed to be aimed at kids--that's the gig. An issue like #145 would be completely inappropriate in that regard (as would issues 146, 147 and 149). So--I did what I could with it.

If the mail is any indication--it worked okay. A lot of folks will stick around for the next couple at least. we'll see how that works out.
