Leonardo Da Vinci, Imhotep, Sir Issac Newton, Nostradamus and Galileo are among the members of the Brotherhood of the Shield and have saved us all countless times. What events did they set in motion that still affect the Marvel U today? Do not miss the book that will be talked about for the next ten years.

  1. Is this suppose to bimonthly or just late ?

  2. bimonthly

  3. I wasn’t too interested in this book… but then I realized that it was going to be talked about for the next ten years.

  4. This is planned for 60 issues right? A bi-monthly 60 issue comic. This is going to be a long read.

  5. @USPUNX- I’m excited by the thought of being able to read this book with my future grandchildren.

  6. Bi-monthly makes this more affordable for me. I’m gonna try it for a little bit longer.

  7. @JumpingJupiter…  I’ve got the opposite reaction.  It seems I’m going to have to re read the previous issue each time a new one comes out.  It’s a good story, but I’m thinking bi monthly is going to lose my interest.  I’ll reread issue one to see if this is something I need to stick with.

  8. I might just do trades for this since it’s bi-monthly and most like won’t effect the 616 universe right away. i think if i read it in trade i’ll get the same enjoyment

  9. @Kent: Yeah, most people feel that way. Me I don’t read many comic books so I like to re-read the ones I do buy. It’s part of the fun for me. 🙂

  10. I am disappointed this is a bi-monthly series. Hickman hasn’t stated why, although it probably has to do with the art. It’s a shame, but I wanna continue this. The first issue was so good, so very very good. It’s hard for me to consider dropping it after only one issue.

  11. I think it’s around 12 issue maxiseries, if memory serves me right. 60 issues would take about 30 years.

  12. Like FF and Secret Warriors, Hickman has long term plans for this series. Whether or not the series last as long as he has planned is another issue entirely.

  13. Does anyone know for sure how long this series is going? There’s a lot of different opinions on this thread and google has rendered nothing so far

  14. I didn’t fall all over last issue like a lot of people did, but I’m giving it one or two more to win me over. I’ll still perplexed by fair-haired, light-skinned Da Vinci though.

  15. @roivampire Hickman has said he plans for 60 issues. However, that’s an ideal case that depends a lot on the book having consistent sales and not suffering form it’s bi-monthly schedule. It essentially needs to become "appointment" comics like Astonishing X-Men or All-Star Superman – a book that people will run to no matter how late it ships (It should be noted those were series that lasted only 24 issues and 12 respectively, both which took about 3.5-4 years to complete)

  16. @RoiVampire: It goes as long as it goes. Any answer anyone can give you now would be from someone not involved in the book and any length it is set to go now could change for a variety of reasons: sales, creative, etc.

  17. Shipping schedule aside, there were things that I strongly liked and disliked about the first issue. Needless to say, I loved the magnificent art spreads. I also liked the clever mixing of real history with the Marvel lore. That being said, there was nothing to hook me with the overall story. If this was just a story about DiVinci as a SHIELD agent, I wouldn’t care as much. But there was a main character who this series is supposed to revolve around, and I couldn’t find one reason to care about him or his plight. And I don’t buy that this story had to be sacrificed for backstory. Just look at Immortal Iron Fist.

  18. @Conor  ok cool, i was just making sure i wasn’t missing some interview where someone said for sure that it was a maxi series or an ongoing or what have you. This makes it easier to think about trade waiting

  19. If the art and story are good enough I have no problem with a bimothly schedule. And those two things being the case, it is unlikely I would trade wait, because God only knows how long collected forms will take to be produced. Now if it drags and loses my interest, I will drop it and maybe pick the trade years down the road, wondering how it worked all together.

  20. Just imagine how epic a bi-monthly 60 issue series would be! I mean, it would go down in history with Cerebus!

  21. that first issue really didn’t blow my skirt up. It was just a whole lot of nerdy steam-punk goobly goop

  22. If I can find a copy of the 1st issue, I’ll get this. Except there’s a recap page. Is there?

Also, Bi-Monthly means twice a month, Semi monthly means once every 2 months.

  23. iFanboy does not care about morphemes.

  24. oh, you’re actually correct. it’s the other way around. sorry. there’s also a recap page.

  25. Guys,

Keep an open mind and admit it’s a surprise, it seems interesting, and the art draws you in.

  26. Actually this book is bimonthly AND late.  It was solicited to come out last week.  Pretty bad when you have two months and are already behind on issue 2…

  27. @Bruce What is a surprise?

  28. I didn’t notice it but in the solict is says Nostradomus and Sir Issac Newton?

Man Hickman is just pulling in everybody at this point.

  29. @Slockhart Isn’t that a little nitpicky? Who knows why it was pushed back a week? I admire the fact that Marvel’s at least trying to be honest hear, instead of soliciting these monthly and knowing full well it would be late on that kind of schedule. I’ll start worrying when we skip more than a month (and change).

  30. I’ll have to check Nostradamus’ quatrains to see if he knows how many issues this is going to run.

  31. @TNC, by Issue "60", The Mythbusters will be the agents.

    @Scorpion: speak for yourself.

  32. @Nathan Hey here’s a guy who wouldn’t mind that 🙂

  33. Maybe Kari Byron is Black Widow.

  34. @Edward – But you’re a Grant Morrison fan.  You LOVE gobbly gook!  😉

  35. If each issue is relatively stand alone Im on board, the minute I HAVE to go find a previous issue to know whats going on is the minute this becomes more fustrating than its worth

  36. @PraxJarvin – Like you, I am giving #2 a shot to see how it goes.  #1 was so overhyped to death for me.

  37. Just a guess, but I’d wager that once Hickman’s work on FF and/or SW is nearing a close this book will start coming out on a more regular basis. I’ll stick it out until that time anyhow. If it’s still bi-monthly at that point I may revert to trade………

    wait and see

  38. @PostMan – the book is not bi-monthly because of Hickman, it is because of the art.

  39. @Road: Which is awesome!

  40. I am glad that cooler heads have prevailed, and people aren’t screaming anymore how this book is God’s gift to comic fans.

  41. Its not gods gift to comic fans but so far its been pretty f’in entertaining. Gods gift to comic fans would to make this shit free….PLEASE JESUS…

  42. It would take 10 years to do 60 issue bi-monthly. I’m cool with that.

  43. Da shit!

  44. THIS IS GOD"S GIFT TO COMIC BOOK  FANS!

Er, not really, but issue 1 was seriously cool.

  45. I’m looking forward to seeing if/how the actually story progresses.  half of the first issue was setting up the world and were only introduced to the main character.  the solicitation text makes it seem like this second issue will be the same.

  46. So yeah, that script towards the end of the issue seriously threw me off. Did Weaver still not have time to finish this? Even with a scheduled two months for each issue? That could be a big problem if that’s the case.

Still, the 99% of this looking like a regular comic was fantastic read it. More exposition so that will probably be a deal breaker for everyone. Still it’s only the 2nd issue, I didn’t expect nothing else but more exposition even with the wait. Great artwork (that Weaver finished at least) and some great fight sequences in this. Loved to see Nostradamus in this…..where was Issac Newton though?

    4/5

  47. If you go to my review, Dustin Weaver (it’s actually him!) explains the script pages in the issue.

  48. Really good stuff!

  49. Trippy!

  50. This book is pretty, but I don’t know if it’s 2-months-and-still-late pretty.  I’d rather have the art get pulled back a little so the book can keep a monthly momentum… or just wait until it’s over and grab the Omnibus.  I’m dropping for now.

  51. This was a ton of fun and the art was amazing.

  52. I hate to be negative, but this was as much fun as reading a textbook. I still really like Dustin Weaver’s art, though.

  53. This was alright. Not as great of a read as the first issue, but I’m sticking around. Beautiful artwork though.

  54. Meh, this is fun enough to keep me around, but am I the only one who doesn’t actually see a coherent plot in here yet?

  55. @CaseyJustice Nope, you’re not.

  56. Ahead of their time masters at work.

  57. I absolutely get why this book is for some people, but it is, I can say now categorically, not for me. I find myself wanting to like Hickman more than actually liking him about half of the time, then being knocked over by him the other half. I’ll file this one under Secret Warriors unfortunately, cause I was hoping to file it under Fantastic Four.

  58. As far as I can tell:

The story is how SHIELD, an organization that has saved the world hundreds of times, seems to be on the verge of letting it get destroyed. Di Vinci says that the leader for the organization is up to something and he holds something in his hand to save the world. Leonid is also a key factor as he is an integral peice to a machine to help save the world. Although the line isn’t mentioned in this issue, the theme seems to be for this series: ‘This isn’t how the world will end’. So, again to me at least, Leonid is key to save the world…..but with only 2 issues in we have no idea what it is yet.

I’ll admit (as I gave it a 4 and stated there were some faults to begin with) this isn’t a perfect series now. Leonid is a bit underdeveloped and the lack of a monthly schedule hurts. To me though, I just love a rich and deep mystery that is thought provoking and confusing at the same time. It’s why I love Morrison as a writer and it’s why I like Hickman too.

  59. There have been some head-scratching moments so far, but there is definitely enough good stuff to keep me coming back.

  60. @TNC: See my comment under Praxjarvin’s review to read why I think the G-Mo comparison is not accurate. 🙂

  61. After only 2 issues this is easily my favorite series coming out right now. Hickman is the best thing to happen to comics in a long time. This book makes everything happening in the marvel universe right now seem so childish.

  62. how much crack do you have to smoke to write a script like this? I think Hickman and Morrison have the same dealer.

  63. Fantastic.  Hickman’s awesome ability to project history into the future.  Can’t wait for the next issue.

  64. i think hickman should have taken a more tempered approach to introducing the reader to the story. they is a little much going on here.

and who is the dude in black? is it Nightman from always sunny?

  65. Meh.

  66. Hickman does a great job telling big stories, but not a very good job writing a single issue of a comic book. Since im primarily a single issues guy, this isnt doing it for me, and it will probably get dropped. Id consider waiting for the collected editions, but if these are bimonthly,  thats a year till the hardcover, then even more for a trade. I probably will have lost interest by then.

  67. Okay, Ive been loving both Secret Warriors and Fantastic Four. And I’m okay with those PDA endings in FF. But what the fuck was that page of script 3/4 of the way through? I understand they are just descending a stair, but it COMICS damn it!!! Draw a Fucking picture!  Completly jarring.

  68. @AlanRob: It’s a storytelling device that Hickman uses a lot.

  69. @conor I heard you guys talking about his use of it in his indy books on the POTW podcast.  I really havent read any, but would love to check some out.  Its just that it felt strange to me here.  Maybe if I had seen it before it wouldnt have tripped me up as much.
