  1. Is this tied to Secret Invasion and the Marvel U?

  2. @Brandon2

I don’t think it is, as I believe the villain in the first arc is Ezekiel Stane (Obadiah’s son) which is carrying over from "the order" which fraction just finished, but who knows mabye ezekiel will be a skrull.

  3. My understanding is that the first arc of this won’t be tied in to other events in the Marvel U.  It’s supposed to be a jump-on-able new title, presumably hoping to catch curious movie fans.  Hopefully it will just work around Secret Invasion.

  4. I’ve been a huge Iron Man fan since I picked up a comic way back when, and something just hit me the other day:

This Wednesday, Iron Man will officially have more ongoing series in the 616 universe than Spider-Man.  Seriously… think about that.

I think I might leak joy from my eyeballs.

  5. @Tork-It won’t last.  One of the Iron Man books is destined to fail. I just don’t think he’s a character able to support two books. It would be nice to have an Iron Man book that actually felt like it was part of the Marvel Universe, though.

  6. How is Matt Fraction a rising star writer for Marvel? What book has he written alone that has succeeded? Punisher’s sales are awful. The Order was cancelled. His only successful book was co-written by Ed Brubaker.

  7. @shogunt — Fraction was put on ‘Iron Fist’ with Brubaker specifically as an apprenticeship/ crash course for writing Marvel books.  The fact that ‘The Order’ — a team book with all original characters — even got launched is pretty impressive. Obviously, somebody is impressed with the quality and originality of his work.  I don’t think raw sales are much of a gauge for ‘rising stardom’ in this industry.

  8. I think Iron Man is one the most capable characters at this point in MU to hold two books.  He’s right in the middle of a huge surge of popularity due to the movie and is one of the centerpieces of the MU right now.  Couple that with how you can make one book a political spy thriller (Director of SHIELD) and one book a hi-tech superhero romp (Invincible) and all you need is quality writing to sustain it.  If Wolverine can be on three different X-teams, the Avengers, and then still have two solo books, I think we can afford to give Tony a couple ongoings and not worry about burning him out.  It’s the man’s time to shine, I say!

  9. @ohcaroline-But unfortunately sales dictate who the star writers are.  When Brubaker gets on a book, sales jump. When Bendis gets on a book, sales jump. Millar. Even the awful Loeb. These people are stars. And they all at one point or another have taken unwanted or even unknown characters and reinvigorated them sales-wise. Fraction hasn’t done that. I’m not saying he’s bad because I like his work. I just don’t quite get the idea of him as a rising star. His track record with Marvel right now is no better than Joe Pruett’s was; or David Hine; or Joseph Harris or any other supposedly up ‘n coming writer who’s sales didn’t prove that out.

As for Iron Man, his book right now sells about 35,000 copies a month or so? That’s not exactly burning up the charts.  Now you’re possibly dividing up the audience by introducing an entirely different book. The idea that fans of the movie are going to come looking for Invincible Iron Man is a joke. What’s going to happen is that they’re going to see both books on the rack, get confused, and probably not buy either of them.  Don’t forget, Spider-Man could barely support multiple books and he’s the flagship Marvel character.

  10. @shogunt – Fraction’s a rising star because Marvel tells us he is, basically.

  11. I wouldn’t be so dismissive of fans not flocking to Iron Man out of the movie.  I know several of my friends who couldn’t care less about Iron Man are now clammoring at me to tell them what Iron Man stories I think they should get.

I think it’s going to come down to the writing.  Two books out hasn’t hurt the Avengers books or the Green Lantern books.  I sincerely doubt people who like Director of SHIELD are going to up and drop the book just because there’s another book out of confusion.  I fail to see how two books is going to confuse somebody who’s been buying one to pick up none.  If anything, new fans will at least check Invincible Iron Man out and fans of DOS will either pick up both or keep buying just DOS.  It all comes down to the quality of writing and art.  If it’s good on both, they’ll shine.  If not, they won’t.  It all rests of Matt Fraction, Stuart Moore, and the art teams to do a good job.

  12. Fraction’s a great writer with a good track record and lot of fans, thats grounds for a star writer to me.

  13. He did the Sensational Spider-Man Annual that got nominated for an Eisner last year. I really liked that story… even if it got retconned.

  14. @Tork– that was an awesome issue.

  15. I’m still not sure if I’m going to pick this one up.  Its either Avengers/Invaders or this one tomorrow… gonna have to be a game time decision.

  16. Let’s see shellhead out of his typical Shield red tape for once and just enjoy a good Iron Man Story.  Pick it up so it can last even a little while for us very devoted Iron Fans.

  17. All I really want is an Iron Man book where he fights other people in robot suits and the occosional giant space dragon. Is that too much to ask?

  18. Yeah, what Conor says.  Star = hype and  Marvel creates the hype.

I mean, I like Fraction so I am biased, but I’d be saying the same thing if they were talking about an up-and-comer I don’t like.

Seriously, y’all, how many magazine covers had Brad Pitt been on before he made a movie anyone saw?

  19. @Tork-They said the same stuff about X-men when it’s movies were coming out.  How much of an impact did it have on comic sales? Does anyone have a figure?

  20. @shogunt  A movie’s not going to sell a comic on its own, but it’s definitely getting this launch some attention, and if people like the book they’ll stick with it.  That said, I won’t be surprised if the Iron Man books get folded back into one post Secret Invasion. (if Tony’s not director of SHIELD anymore, that book doesn’t really have a function –) But it’s not a bad plan to wait and see how the sales shake down.

  21. DOOOOOH!!!!

Why did I have to like the movie so much????  This is a last minute add to my pull list.

Damn that charming Robert Downey Jr!  Daaaaamn him!!  🙂

  22. The combination of Fraction *and* my recent interest in the movie has got me curious enough to pick this up. If it was some other writer I wasn’t familiar with, I probably wouldn’t be as eager to try it out.

Anyone who doesn’t think Fraction can write mainstream superheroes should check out that Sensational Spider-Man Annual mentioned above. It is indeed the best single issue of Spider-Man that I’ve read in the last two years.

  24. Oops, sorry for the double post…

@ iFanboys – is there a way for us to go back and edit or delete our posts?

  25. @Ohcaroline, yeah, Tony isn’t Director then folding the book makes sense.  And I agree the movie can certainly draw attention to the book and if the writing is good, then all is good.

I think if the X-Men sales didn’t spike, it was because Marvel was doing Revolution which was something of a dissappointment.

  26. Like many have said above, my love for the movie got me to pick this one up… and I loved it.  I’m already hooked.  The art was gorgeous, and the story involved a nice mix of action and characterization.  well done, Mr. Fraction.

A thought crossed my mind after reading an Iron Man movie review on another site.  It talked about how most of the kids in the theater have never held/read a real comic book.  So that got me thinking… what if Marvel decided to give out free books at each of their movies?  Even if it was just opening weekend, I bet this could stimulate future sales.  If that was too much, then maybe they could just try something like "bring your ticket to your local comic shop for a discounted/free book".  If 10% of kids (or adults) make the trek to an LCS, it would be great for the business.  I’m curious to know what others think of this…

  27. @DocHess – Love your idea of bringing the ticket stub to an LCS.  I enjoyed this issue and I’m going to pick up a few more copies later this week and give them to some friends who liked the movie but have never read a comic

  28. God, the first page of this broke my heart. I thought this was a great issue. I’m really excited about where this sereis is going.

  29. This is the Iron Man book I have always longed for

  30. This book is crap.  I think people are drunk with the movie buzz, and it’s make them view this book through beer goggles.

  31. @Brandon2 — By all means, expand on your opinions, but people are saying why they like it, and it’s hard to actually answer criticisms that you’re not explaining —

  32. Really good book that I don’t know where to fit in continuity.  Same as Avengers – Invaders.  Unfortunately, until SI is over, I think there will be lots of books that are good/very good that I don’t know where to fit in continuity.  And I’m like Ron, the continuity bug will gnaw at me and keep me from thinking of this as just a really good book.

  33. I really liked this book. I thought it was well written, it was nice to see Pepper back in a book, and Larroca’s art was very solid. I’m not worried about where it all "fits" in Continuity. I think that continuity should only be refereed to when it is important. otherwise, you’ll spend half the book just showing how it fits in to other stories that the audience may or may not be reading, and you have no time left to tell the story you want to tell. I give this one a thumbs up. It seems like a throwback iron man title, the type of story that made me fall in love with the character in the first place.

  34. what was with the photo cover? i get to my LCS on thursday, and all they have left is robert downey looking not very iron-manly. they could have at least used a picture of the armor for a first issue.

  35. I’m not having a continuity problem; I think this is pretty obviously pre-secret invasion. And I guess I can see being bothered by that, but what’s the alternative?  Everybody should stop telling stories until SI is over?

  36. Theoretically, Secret Invasion could happen over the course of a few days in November (when the series ends) so any book written now happens now and Secret Invasion happens then.

  37. John Siuntres intereviewed Matt Fraction in this week’s word balloon.  Its a quality conversation that is definitely worth checking out.   In it, Fraction explains that the first six issue arc is set to take place before SI.  The original plan was for the second arc to jump to the post-SI marvel U, but he said that scheduling may necessitate a "mini-arc" (also known as filler issues).

  38. @JohnVFerrigno – "I think that continuity should only be refereed to when it is important. otherwise, you’ll spend half the book just showing how it fits in to other stories that the audience may or may not be reading, and you have no time left to tell the story you want to tell."

Not really.  All it’d take is a little box saying "These events take place before/during/after Secret Invasion."

  39. Stupid Drunk Comment:

I bought something crazy like 20 books this month, I’m not quite through them all but this will be a hard book to beat for the best this week.  I’ve always kinda liked Iron Man but whenever I bought his series I’ve always been bored/ uninterested in catching up with it.  I’ve always just admired from afar ( I loves me some Mighty Avengers Iron Man, when he’s in it, and I agreed with him in Civil War) This issue is awsome in that it’s almost current in Marvel continuity (no SI) but is also written to grab people fresh from the movie.

  40. Fraction’s writing is horrible in this book.  I don’t know what you guys are thinking,  The amount of illogical stuff (like tony not hearing about the bombing for 5 hours).  Then there is just shit that’s stupid like Advanced Genocide mechanics and tony sliding down that slippery slope that leads to "long nights alone with jack and jim and johnny and eventually ol grand-dad and some Tussin."  Tussin, really Matt come on. Maybe you should stick to jack and janet and puff and ol spot and some running.
