Which DC comics came out the month you were born?

This awesome link went around Twitter over the weekend and it was too good not to share.

Mike's Amazing World of DC Comics has a page called the Time Machine that lets you see what was published every month from 1935 to 2011 (Full Disclosure: I did not go through every month of every year to check to make sure.)

The most notable issue from my birthday month is probably:

Pretty cool. What's really interesting to see — if you're old like me — is the depth and breadth of titles that DC used to publish. There are titles that would never, ever, ever in a million years make it in today's market.

But who's got the best set of releases on their birthday month?

Comments

1. Superman #319
Action Comics #479

Matthew

2. The only interesting thing I could find out while looking at my birth month was that Hawk and Dove actually once had their own ongoing. For some reason, I’d always assumed they were just people you subbed one of the Justice Leagues if you’re two members short.

3. Lets see we got:

Detective Comics #600
Justice League of America #27 (I point this out because it has an Exorcist parody for a cover. Anyone know why that is?)
Aquaman #1
Sandman #6 (The famous issue where a group of people at a diner go insane in 24hrs)

4. The Joker #7 (giggle-giggle, cough-cough)
Plop #21 (Wha?)
Blitzkrieg #3 (Wha?!?)
Secret Society of Super Villains #1
Action Comics #459
Superman #299

5. Mine is one where Batman is touching Robin.  On the shoulders and buttcheeks.  On Detective Comics from the 80s.  Oh why did I not see that one coming?

6. I got Flash number One of the Wally West series and Jason Todd’s post Crisis appearence and a bunch of other stuff 🙂

7. @TheGoddamnDeadpool  my same response

Oct 88′
-Dr.Fate #1
-batman a death in the family pt 3

and a lot of sutff that sounded crazy like… COPS central organization of police specialists and HayWire?

8. Hey, I actually own two of the issues that came out on my birth month. TALES OF THE NEW TEEN TITANS #4 and FURY OF FIRESTORM #4. Neat.

9. @JLA1  Same!

10. August, ’84.

Atari Force #11!

And Superman #401, which I own!

11. Oct 1986:

-Demon #1 & #2 (Etrigan’s series)
-Watchmen #5

-History of the DC Universe #1
-Legends #3

12. Green Lantern/ Green Arrow #6

“He Overdosed… He’s Dead. He… LOST”
“Like HELL!

Awesome.

13. Animal Man #5, yesss

14. Green Lantern 200! (Older than me by 1 day!) Infinity Inc. 26! Both of which I own.

I also know that X-Factor #1 came out the same week.

15. @JeffR  We’re pretty close, then. I have Fury of Firestorm #1 and Tales of the New Teen Titans #1.

16. Lets see, The only real notable one for me is Justice Inc #1 and an issue of Justice League. which is pretty par the course for me I suppose

17. JUST and FYI, the books are alphabetized by week.. so you can actually figure out the day if you so cared. (You can also click on the cover of any book and see the release day for it.)

18. Son of Ambush Bug #6 YES!

19. January ’79.

Green Lantern #115.  I’m 15 issues older than Conor.

“The ghost who haunted Batman.”
I may have to hunt that one down.

Also, SuperFriends #19, which features Wonder Woman riding a Kangaroo on the cover.

Sounds like an absurdly good month.

20. This thread makes me feel both young and very old simultaneously.  Yay relativity.

21. Batman #250
Action #425
Weird War #15
Swamp Thing #5
Johnny Thunder #3

call me professor.

22. ooh Emeradl Dawn #4

23. Action Comics #664
Batman: Tales of the Demon TPB
Detective Comics #628
Emerald Dawn II #1
Legends of the Dark Knight #17 (part of the awesome “Venom” arc)
Flash #50
Robin #5
Batman #462
Hellblazer #41 (part 1 of “Dangerous Habits” – the best arc of the series)
Sandman #26

24. My month/year is also a heavy John Ostrander month. He has about 5-6 titles coming out in a single month.

25. December ’90

Justice League Europe #22: Awesome cover involving a man threatening to shoot a cat unless I buy the comic. Priceless.

Justice League America #47: An issue featuring General Glory, how can I not highlight it?

26. Dectective Comics #428 (Which I went out a bought)
Batman #245
Komandi #1
Swamp Thing #1

Swamp Thing and Komadi not bad.

27. I’m just going to post the ones i have never heard of and from the looks of it there was quite a few in August of 81.

G.I. Combat #235

Ghost #106

Secerts of Haunted House #42

House of Mystery #298

Unexpected #216

28. I had JLA 250 written by Gerry Conway, and Green Lantern #200.
Swamp Thing #48 by Alan Moore, The Shadow #1 (for mature readers) , and Electric Warrior #1.

Blows my mind that Warlord (whom I have never heard of) was at issue #105! And GI Combat was at #283!

29. Not much in September 1990.

First issue of a Lobo mini-series
Suberboy #10
Green Lantern #6
Just shy of a significant Swamp Thing issue, I got Swamp Thing #101

30. Woo Hoo ! Superman 233 with him busting out the chains ! Rockin !

31. Shit – That makes me pretty damn old compared to you guys…. {slump}

32. Crisis on Infinite Earths #4; and Flash #347, which I think is the final issue of the Trial of the Flash story.

33. ugh, you guys are making me feel old.

I’m born right in the middle of Kirby’s DC rennaissance:

New Gods #10, Forever People #10 (with Deadman!), The Demon #1…

Also this was still an era where romance comics could sell:

Girls’ Love Stories, Young Love, Heart Throbs, Young Romance, & Falling in Love.

And, of course, horror:

Ghosts, Weird Western Tales, Weird Worlds, Secrets of Sinister House, House of Secrets, House of Mystery, Witching Hour, & Unexpected.

Gotta love it!

34. New Gods #1 and World’sFinest #200. A decent return.

35. @PraxJarvin  Looks like I am 12 days older than you. Cool!

36. @stuclach  Completely agree – I feel like a total old fart/creepy kid toucher.

As for my list – Dec 1973 (yes, I’m as old as some of your parents)
Swamp Thing 9 with an iconic Wrightson cover
Batman 255 – 100 pager with Bats fighting a werewolf (LOVE me the 70s)
Plop 4 – happy to see this
Adventure Comics 432 – amazing Aparo Spectre cover
and this one
Sad thing is, I don’t think I own any of these.

37. Batman #429: Death in the Family (4 of 4)
V for Vendetta #7
Animal Man #7
Sandman #1

38. Mister Miracle #4
Cops #11

DC really did use to have a broad range of titles that would never survive today.

39. My birth-month is nothing special. V for Vendetta #9, Sandman #2 and 3, and New Gods #1

BUT

If you go to the annual price/pages link, you’ll see that 2010 not only produced more comics in DC history, but it beat second place (2009) by a whopping 91 issues.

40. Welcome Back Kotter #2!

41. January 1972.  I love the cover for Superboy #183 that came out that month.

“ME — SUPERBABY… NOW LORD OF THE JUNGLE!”

52 big pages – only 25 cents!

42. Wikipedia says Sandman #1 (cover date is later).

F- yeah. 😀

43. Also, the January 1972 issue of Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane is a great ‘Superman Is A Dick’ example!

44. Strarman number 10, and Justice league Europe number 2

45. @Czor Wow, at first I thought it was cool that you and me had the same birth month then I noticed we have the same name… now its eerie.

But yeah, pretty much all the ones he listed as well as Batman #400, its a great oversized issue with lots of great artists(Im guessing the only other time Brian Bolland did Batman besides TKJ) and I really went out of my way to track that issue down a long time ago when I knew it came out that month. Still an awesome comic

46. Nothing real crazy going on.

The thing that I notcied is that there was a Hawk and Dove ongoing that was in it’s 22 issue. That shit would never happen today.

47. Sandman #15 seems to the big one for me.

48. Watchmen #1
Batman: The Dark Knight #4
Elvira’s House of Mystery #7

49. Flash #1 (Wally as the Flash) and Booster Gold #17 which I have a copy of!

50. Saga of Swamp Thing #11
Best of DC #34 (actually read that one as a kid)

51. And the site owner must not have liked the popularity. I get a permission denied now.

52. @widowmaker  Works for me.

53. Oh yeah? I got Adventures of Bob Hope #98.

Jealous, bitches? I bet you are.

54. Apparently an issue called Permission Denied #403 came out on my birthday.

55. Wow. I feel old seeing the number of people who had an issue of Sandman out when they were born. I was at the end of my high school years when that series started. What I notice is that they have an “On Sale Date” that implies more than weekly distribution. I’m so used to the weekly cycle that I didn’t know it was ever any different, but Forever People #8 is listed as being on sale Feb. 1, 1972 and Flash #214 on Feb. 3. House of Secrets #97 on Feb. 8 and Superman #250 on Feb. 10.  Points a Tuesday/Thursday release schedule.  I wonder when that went away?

56. Sweet jesus, am i the oldest one here? April 1968, I own Superboy 168 and Green Lantern 60. Interesting to note that Superman 80 page giant celebrated his 40th birthday. At least he is older than I am.

57. @abstractgeek  Nope, got you by 2 years and an epic Bob Hope issue.

58. Dark Knight Returns #3.  Woot.

59. I guess the big ones were Justice League of America #200, Green Lantern #150,  and V for Vendetta in the U.K..  Man i feel old, Dark Knight #3? Good Lord.

60. hrm.  Bomba The Jungle Boy #4.  I was not aware of this ‘Bomba Era’.

..and, to make me feel a little bit older, Batman #200.  I was born 500 issues of Batman ago.  Let me ponder that one while I wait the results of my prostrate test.

61. Action Comics #592
Detective Comics #578
Flash Annual #1

And, something I’m quite happy about, Watchmen #12 was released on the day I was born. Yay, though my parents lifted me to the heavens on the 23rd of June, 1987, not a single comic fan had a $#!* to give, they’re were all nose deep in that sweet stuff.

62. Sweet, I get Batman # 291, with a rather famous Aparo cover image. “Where were you on the night Batman was killed?”  Good stuff, and all for 0.35c!

63. Action Comics #660, Detective Comics #624, Flash #46, Lobo #3, Robin #1, Hellblazer #37 = Cool!

64. Huh.  No Aquaman in my month.  That makes me a bit sad.

Batman #328 in which Batman has a taunting note from a murder walked free!  Also, Secrets of Haunted House #29, which is pretty tenticulariffic.

65. @kennyg  I’m older than you by a year and my “Adventures of Jerry Lewis” #89 trumps your Bob Hope.  Also Wonder Woman 155 (“I married a monster!”) and Girls’ Romances #110 (“I need you, truly need you!”  “Yes, Joe. You need me… but as a mother, not a sweetheart!!”)

66. Time to end this pissing contest. May 1951.

As far as the super hero set is concerned…
Superman #71. “Clark Kent’s Super-Masquerade” cover story of Clark selling kisses for a dollar.

Sensation Comics #104. “The End of Paradise Island” (…Oh that old joke!). WW lassoing a bunch of green ETs off the moon.

Superboy #15. “The Secret of the Golden Coins” stupid time travel story.

Action Comics #158. “The Kid from Krypton” has Kal walk down memory lane w/baby pictures.

Two doppelgänger comic covers: Detective #173 and Wonder Woman 48. You’ve seen them both before: two Batmen swinging down to save a confused Robin and two Wonder Women crashing out of a high rise window wrestling for control of a bomb (gotta track them down).

And my personal fave: Strange Adventures #10. Captain Comet in “The Air Bandits from Space” featuring the captain’s original costume on an Infantino cover!

67. BTW, Mike’s Amazing World is probably the most fun DC-centric website ever. Has been for years!

Close second is The Unofficial Guide to the DC Universe.

68. June ’83
– Ronin #2
– Sword of the Atom #1
– Superman III Movie Special #1
– A Detective and Batman crossover featuring the first appearance of Nocturna!
– Captain Carrot and the Zoo Crew #19

Very cool idea. It’s amazing how despite my being a DC fan for most of my life, there are still titles I’ve never heard of. Characters I can understand. But titles? What the hell was Night Force? And Arak, Son of Thunder? WTF?!

69. @CaeuZokul  May 1951? Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a WINNER!
March 1971  http://www.dcindexes.com/database/comic-details.php?comicid=383
this cover of Action Comics #400 just has me dumbfounded!!
@kennyg ….Adventures of Bob Hope #98? WTF?? was he MI6?

70. On the one hand, Dark Knight #2.  (I have pretty much the best birth year for game-changing comics past the Silver Age.)  On the other hand, something called “Son of Ambush Bug.”  You win some, you lose some.

71. OCT 1992

– Spectre 1

72. Superboy featuring the Legion of Super Heroes #200
Flash #225
Swamp Thing #8 (oooh, Wrightson)
House of Mystery #221(and more Wrightson, inked by Kaluta!)
Limited Collector’s Edition C-24 (Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer)
World’s Finest #221 (The Super-Sons!)
Plop #3(loved those Wolverton Covers)
Quite a few cool books. I’ve seen this on Mike’s site before, but never used it to look up my birthday books.

73. July ’79
JLA #171
Weird War tales #80
Unknown Soldier #232
Sgt. Rock #333
Action Comics #500

74. Action Comics #418
Brave and the Bold #104
Detective Comics #429
Supergirl #1
Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #154
Teen Titans #42
Wonder Woman #203

Does this mean something in some form of comic book astrology? Is my sign Supergirl? Eek. I need to see what Marvel published…

Also, it occurs to me that we can just use what issue of Action or Detective comics came out to discuss age amongst comic fans.  To legally drink in the state of California, you need to have been born before Action Comics #650.  Which makes me feel old, since I graduated high school at Action Comics #655.

I don’t like this any more.

75. Welcome Back, Kotter #4

76. I own Batman #401.(heh, Magpie.)

Man of Steel #3 and 4.
Swamp Thing #54. (MOORE!!!)
Legends #1.

77. @r3v  argh.  Why did my font get all huge-ified?

78. Jonzz SMASH! Been trying to see this all day and keep getting the 403 access forbidden msg.

79. Six different war comics with Joe Kubert covers.

And Action Comics #500.

July 1979.

80. I’m not up on my comic book history, so I have no idea if the ones sold during my birth month (Nov ’80) were notable or not. The one that caught my eye was Jonah Hex #45 – apparently he got married this issue?

Also: four different war comics with Joe Kubert covers.

81. Another old codger (August ’55).  I find it interesting that aside from Action, Adventure and Batman, the only comic with an issue number above 100 is Hopalong Cassidy #108!

82. Batman 271! I am buying Issue 706 Wednesday, jeez!

83. Wow, I’d have to say Green Lantern #78 or Falling In Love #116.

84. Action #488
No Detective Comics!
but 2 Flash issues #266, 267
2 JLA issues #159,160
Wierd War Tales
World’s Finest

lots of good titles. Damn what a great time for comics.

I betchya there were some sweet Farrah Fawcet and Daisy Duke poster ads in the back of those comics!

At that cover price i could have had all 33 issues released that month for the same price as 4-5 comics this week. haha

85. The number of people talking about books from my college years is actively depressing me.@TheNextChampion is talking about books I remember buying at Book Breakers in junior high. Yeesh.

Don’t laugh too loud! The Reaper is coming for you, too!

86. The two I thought Noteworthy:

Frank Miller’s Ronin #6
The Legion of Superheroe’s #1

AND

The New Teen Titans #1 with Dick as Nightwing

87. For me, the most notable are Green Lantern #1 and Sandman #16…

88. August ’83

New Adventures of Superboy 47
Detective Comics 532
Action Comics 549
Saga of Swamp Thing 18
Sgt. Rock 382
Green Lantern 170
Green Lantern/Green Arrow 2
JLA 220
Wonder Woman 309
Batman 365
Superman 389

89. November ’85

Crisis on Infinite Earths 12
Swamp Thing 45
Booster Gold 1
Who’s Who 12

90. May ’91… Not bad 🙂

Flash #300. 25th anniversary special!
Jonah Hex had just gone past #50 for the first time… Jonah Hex #51.

91. New Teen titans #1!

Justice League of America #184, with pretty rockin’ cover art featuring Darkseid by George Perez.

92. Wow! Super creepy. The month I was born an issue of Tales of the Teen Titans (#59) came out that I own (for no reason other than it was in a 99cent bin and featured Nightwing’s horrible 80s costume). It was also DC’s 50th anniversary that year so a lot of the covers are defaced with giant 50’s.

Other Notables:
*Crisis on Infinite Earths was in full swing (#8)
*Two Firestorm comics (seriously. Regular monthly AND an annual)
*Outsiders #1 (team at the time: Black Lightning, Geoforce, Halo, Katana, Looker and Metamorpho)
*A Nocturna & Anton Knight issue of Batman
*Deadman #8 (Which I really want to read now)
*The Issue of Detective Comics featuring a cover of Batman KISSING Nocturna in total cheap paperback romance novel style.
*Swamp Thing, Blue Devil, Vigilante, Omega Men & V (yes from the tv-series. Aliens.)

Apparently 1985 was awesome for more reasons than just my birth.

93. Here’s something crazy: in my birthyear, 1980, DC released 3 number issues THE ENTIRE YEAR! And only one, the New Teen Titans, was ongoing. The other two were three issue mini-series. Contrast that with tomorrow, where DC will be releasing three number one issues in the same week.

94. 80 Page Giants premeired on my birthday.  Nice!

95. @abstractgeek  I got you beat, June of 1964 :).

96. New Adventures of Superboy #39 came out on my birthday.  The world without Christmas issue with Dial H for Hero backup.

97. April 1959:

Batman #124 – “The Mystery Seeds From Space”
Flash #107 – “The Amazing Race Against Time”
World’s Finest #102 – “The Caveman From Krypton”

Check out the covers – priceless!

98. i happen to know (or at least this is how i remember it without checking but i’m pretty sure i’m right,) that New Mutants #1 came out the same time as i did (March ’83)–both of us to critical acclaim
