Comments

  1. What a wonderful group of sketches!? The Aquaman by Mike Allred is just wonderful and the Silver Surfer by Francesco Francavilla is stunning. And it’s great to see a new sketch by Phil Noto and Skottie Young every week!

  2. Skottie Young and Ryan Ottley are my favorites,,,great week

  3. Love the serenity of that Silver Surfer piece. Francavilla’s aesthetic sensibilities never cease to impress.

And what’s up with that Allred piece? Aquaman stabbed Flash in the junk with a trident, while Superman scopes out his butt cheeks, and Green Lantern and Wonder Woman pass out after getting it on with waters gushing up above them? I’m not the only one seeing this, am I?

  4. Francesco Francavilla’s Silver Surfer is just extraordinary. What a stark, lonely image. That’s my favorite in a long time.

  5. The Animal Man sketch is just strange. I just don’t get it.

  6. What a batch! My favorite is probably the Surfer, but I will always absolutely love the Citizen V design… Prolly alone on that one, but I stand by it. What’s more patriotic than purple?

  7. Great week of sketches – Noto & Cinar simply killed it.

  8. Ottley. BooOOSH!

I feel like you’d need a scientific microscope to get that kinda detail in there. Is this an Ottley level up or is this a technique I’m not used to? (Or both?)

  9. Yeah, this week’s Sketch Up definitely brought its A-game.

  10. Wow I don’t know where to start, those were all so great. The surfer was fantastic! Roy Batty hot damn I need to watch tht soon. The batman was perfect…I could go on. Thanks for a wicked batch !

  11. Always in awe of such talent! Great takes on a variety of characters! Love them all!

  12. I’m always amazed by how stunning something as simple as Francavilla’s Silver Surfer can be.

  13. Picking a favorite is too hard here. There really are a LOT of amazing artists working in comics today.

  14. Great trip down 80s memory lane. Eclectic taste in art that highlights one size does not fit all. I noticed that this week, the simpler the design the stronger my emotional resonance. Or I may just have a space thing today. Silver Surfer gliding through the cosmos, seeing things that we would not even believe….

    Time to die.

  15. The Francavilla Surfer is just wonderful. I can FEEL the vast emptiness of space in that pic. But My fav has to be Ben Dale’s Leon. Just wonderful cartoon character of a great movie. Fills me with childish joy….and the desire to become a hitman lol.

  16. Silver Surfer is excellent. Simplicity is quite often the right way to go. You can imagine just what he may be thinking.

  17. I thought nothing was going to top a Skottie Young Ninja Turtle. Then I saw that Silver Surfer. Jesus, this is the best sketch up ever.

  18. Another excellent week! Really love that Surfer sketch. Francavilla is some kind of Magic Man!

Also, I’m suddenly in the mood to watch 2001. Leon/Professional too, but mostly 2001 🙂

  19. Skottie Young is killin’ it lately.
    Francavilla’s Surfer is almost haunting.
Always good to see some Allred.
Hipp’s Jurassic Park is adorable (check out DNA guy in the bottom left!).
But ya can’t beat Noto doing one of my favorite scifi moments. It’s like he’s in my head.

    Terrific Sketch Up.

  20. The Batman’s a little pervy but I like it.
    Nice selections as always.

  21. A humorous web strip starring Leon and Mathilda? Yes please.

  22. Wonderful artwork, a feast for the eyes. Thanks to Josh for bringing it all to our attention!

My favorites are Allred’s Aquaman, Francovilla’s Silver Surfer (almost deco-ish in its simple geometry), Mitten’s HAL9000, and of course Noto’s Roy Batty (which I want on my wall! especially if I can get a version without the text overlay!).

  23. This has been a horrible, horrible day. Then i saw the Ryan Ottley Cerebus sketch and everything was a little better. And there is something about that Silver Surfer one that is just so sad and beautiful.

  24. I Love you Mike Allred!! Still LMMFAO at that Aquaman piece!!

  25. The Cerebus and Silver Surfer sketches are just…wow.

  26. That Francovilla kid is good. I like how he turned the color scheme on its head.

  27. Why is the Francovilla pic gone?

  28. My god, that Aquaman is fantastic!!
