Steve Dillon Joins Jason Aaron on INCREDIBLE HULK #8 for “Stay Angry”

“Imagine if you took the Crank movies and stuck The Hulk in them.”

That’s how writer Jason Aaron describes the next story arc in The Incredible Hulk, which kicks off in May with issue 8 and is entitled “Get Angry”.

Following the “shocking, explosive ending [of the current story arc]” that Aaron promises will change The Hulk’s status quo, The Hulk hits the road in a five issue story with each issue being “relatively self contained” and featuring different artists drawing The Hulk meeting up with different characters in different locations around the Marvel Universe.

First up? The Punisher in Mexico drawn by Aaron’s Punisher Max collaborator Steve Dillon.

As someone who has built their legend on more street level books with characters who look (relatively) normal, artist Steve Dillon is not someone you think of right away when you hear the words “The Hulk”. And while Aaron doesn’t know exactly what Dillon said when the issue was pitched to him, Aaron imagines it happened this way: “Steve probably had a Guinness and said, ‘Okay, I’ll draw The Hulk.'”

“[Working with Steve Dillon again] is pretty awesome,” Aaron said. “It’s great to work with Steve on anything.” Adding, “Steve’s one of my all-time favorite artists. Steve can draw anything he sets his mind to, especially something that’s whacked out and crazy and full of Steve Dillon sort of characters.”

The Incredible Hulk #8 finds The Hulk in Mexico, facing off against drug cartels and teaming up, in classic buddy cop fashion, with The Punisher. “It’s Hulk wandering into an issue of Preacher,” Aaron joked.

Kicking off the second act of the story that Aaron is telling in The Incredible Hulk, “Stay Angry” will see The Hulk meeting up with Wolverine and Kraven the Hunter in future chapters and will feature fast paced story telling and lots of action. “I’m trying to make this the most frenetic thing I’ve ever written,” Aaron said.

As for artists? After Steve Dillon draws the first issue in the arc, Pasquel Ferry will draw the next. And then after that? “I’ve seen the list of who all of them are,” Aaron said. “But other than Steve, I’ve never worked with them before.”

The Incredible Hulk #8 hits store in May 2012.

Incredible Hulk under Jason Aaron has been quite great, as it shows a creator who is trying to tell a fresh, entertaining and original story featuring a big name character. It’s a series that allows the creators to stretch their legs creatively and imaginatively, and thus it makes for a better series.
